I was reading the Steingraeber online catalogue last night, and noticed that the author kept on mentioning that Steingraeber was a frequent winner of the "Paris Piano Tests". I believe that the winner is awarded a "CHOC", whatever that is.

What are these "Tests", how often are they held, how are the participants chosen and evaluated, and what significance (if any) are these "Tests"?

Thanks to Google, I found out that the "Choc" was a price awarded by the French magazine "Le monde de la musique" (the world of music), which has been taken over by the magazine "Diapason" (tuning fork). Basically it's a price awarded by a music magazine that no longer exists.

With Google I found the following site:
Explanation (in German)
When you click the link "Zur Website der Auszeichnung" (to the website of the award), you are taken to the Diapason site which says: Page not found. The suggestion to do a search there would sound like a good one... if there was a search option. smirk

Maybe Steingraeber should reconsider mentioning that award.

These tests have been on the web for a while ago you can still find some of them here:
http://www.pianos-galland.com/steingraeber-pianos-droits.htm

Some of the articles mention other makes such as Fazioli and Bluthner.

Comparing pianos to wine, remember vintages can vary tremendously. An exceptional Steingraeber 2009 is no guarantee of a fine Steingraeber 2013.
