My Piano Teacher today during Lesson #6:

"There is a special room for people like you who don't practice dynamics".

This quote is best repeated with a dignified Russian accent, and a humorously stoic demeanor.

Oye!

Ah, but you have a wise teacher. Besides the quote of the week, I bet she drove home the message about dynamics that you will keep with you for a long, long time. Whenever you catch yourself playing p when it calls for pp, you will probably see that stoic look. Heck, I think I'll see that look. Your teacher was probably grinning inside.

No, that was my one good teacher, a handsome war bride from Marseilles, almost fifty years ago.

I'm really missing those funny quotes.

Well, as you know I've no teacher but I can guarantee I use to speak with myself in a manner that I couldn't reproduce it on a distinct site like PW...

Dipseys dad (Beric) to me during a sight reading lesson: "almost"

Me ; "almost?"

Beric : "almost the right note, nearly at the right time, close to the right duration"

My first teacher didn't speak English, she tried valiantly to use the CDEFGAB names for the notes, instead of DO, RE, MI, FA, SOL, LA, SI

There were days when I didn't know if she was speaking English and saying "C", or speaking Italian and saying "SI" (for B), or if she was saying "Si!" (for Yes!).... but the funniest was one day when she told me I had to play "R"..... she meant RE, but instead of saying D, ....it came out "R".

On my 3rd or 4th lesson -

Teacher: Play this with lots of contrast, forte first, then second line piano, third line back to forte.

I played the piece with the changing dynamics best I could.

Teacher: What happened to the dyanmics?

Me: I did them!

Teacher: Oh, you were trying to be subtle.

Me: OMG.

My piano teacher is also my ballet teacher, and her better quotes are during ballet class:

[Russian Accent]

"What are you doing? You only have two legs."

"The audience doesn't have to know you have problems. Try to keep some of it to yourself, yes?"

"Why are you following her? You just make same mistake she makes, then. You think she knows what she's doing? I can assure you she does not."

[/Russian Accent]

I'm working on a section of a piece which has a back-and-forth between a soprano and baritone voice. My teacher says to think of it as two lovers singing to each other. So I play it in the most tender way possible, and when I'm finished he says, "I heard the beautiful young woman, but the second voice sounded like the drunken uncle at a family reunion." *fail*
