Saw a Craigslist post for a Yamaha 52" UX from early 1980's - $3700. It's not in my area but deliver was quoted for $700 which was reasonable.

I had a good tech ( http://www.mrpianotuner.com/ ) check it out and he says:

Quote:
The piano is in great shape. The dampers are just starting to get a little "spring squeek," but it's not noticeable when you play. It's caused by the individual damper springs making tiny clicks that, together, create the illusion of a squeek. You can really only hear it with the top open and actually listening for it. You'd never notice it if I hadn't pointed it out. It typically costs about $75 to $100 to fix. It's just a matter of removing the dampers and rubbing a pencil lead in the grove and putting them back on - about an hour and a half work.

Other than that, it's in really great shape. I did a quick tune over the whole thing. Although it hasn't been tuned in about two years, the tuning was still really good - not unusual for this kind of piano. The owner said you were thinking of driving down to try it out. It's up to you, but I don't think there is anything in particular to be concerned about unless you're looking for a particular tone or something. Considering the money you are spending, and that you will likely have this piano for many years, it might still be worth the drive and a night's hotel just to make sure you're totally happy with it.

Sounds good? I'm about to Paypal over the money so I'd just like a last confirmation from you all here. It's a 5 hour drive one way to check it out -- but I'm planning on only keeping this piano for 4 years since I'll be moving - so it doesn't need to be perfect.

Hi Allan,

Yamahas are good pianos, and you will probably be okay, but that is a lot of money to pay for a piano that you haven't seen or touched or played.

If you are aware of the risk involved in buying a piano you haven't seen in person or played, I'd say go for it!
What's the worst that can happen? Buyer's remorse and you hate it when you get it? smile

Good luck!

Rick
