I have a Billy Joel Songbook, but haven't worked my way thru it. Can I play "The Stranger" or "NYSOM"? -- I can struggle thru them, but whether I can play them depends on one's standard of what "play" means. 8-) "Lullabye" is still very much a work in progress for me too, but I enjoy it.

Sounds like me, although being self taught and not knowing the chords makes it harder but I'm sure it will sink in eventually like when I was struggling wih guitar now know all the chords...but don't play it Lol. I think as long as you are enjoying and seeing progress while playing that is all that matters. I don't read music :-( but not worried as I learn from Youi Tube and if "their" version sounds great to me then i know I can sound the same as them if I work at it. I have a book I write all the songs I am learning in and use that as a guide while on the Piano. Thanks for your responses. Darren.

I have been working on Floyd Cramer's "Last Date" complete with his slip note style. Sigh.. I've also been working on "Song for Guy" by Elton John. That one is going a bit better.

Some of my favorite intros are Year of the Cat, Minute by Minute, Home at Last, Foreplay, Tiny Dancer...and whenever my little jazz group does Witchcraft I always start it w Toccatta and Fugue and end it with the theme from the Exorcist...just for laughs.

    These aren't intro level songs.

intro level songs would be well known children's melodies, simple folk tunes, christmas carols, that sort of thing. Try playing those by ear, which means, figuring out the melody and fitting appropriate chords to the melody ("harmonizing" the melody.) Do that on songs like:

    when Johnny comes marching home
    yankle doodle dandy
    etc

It might seem remedial or stupid, but I assure you it's far from it. You need to go through the process of internalizing those simple tunes before you can progress to things like New York State of Mind which is basically a jazz song that has key modulations and altered chords.
