Hi, I just recently got my first digital piano, the Yamaha P-155. I'm new to the whole process of recording the music and playing back on my computer, so if anyone could walk me through it I would really appreciate it.

What I've done so far is first recording the music into the USER and then saving it onto a USB through the method described here: http://www.manualslib.com/manual/196831/Yamaha-P155.html?page=32#manual . I've also downloaded LMMS and the Weeds General Midi Soundfont.

The issue I'm having is that when I try to playback my recordings, the sustain pedal is not heard in the midi files. It's heard when I directly play the midi, but not when I'm using the Grand piano soundfonts. What should I be doing to solve this?

Also, I'm only using a USB, but if that is not enough and I need a midi cable, do you mind also directing me to which type I should purchase? Thanks in advance!

Download a copy of "Audacity", a freeware audio recording package.

Get an adapter cable, and connect the headphone output (or LINE OUT -- left and right) of the P155 to the "LINE IN" of your computer's sound card.

. . . If there's no LINE IN, or no stereo "MIC" jack,
. . . you might want to buy a USB sound card like a
. . . Behringer UCA202 .

Start up Audacity, set the input source to be the computer's soundcard, hit the "Record" button, and start playing the piano.

PS -- this technique probably marks me as a Luddite, since it records in the "audio domain", rather than the "digital domain". But it works.

After reading your reference:

What you're saving (the USERxx.MID file) isn't the _sound_ produced by the P155. It's the sequence of key-presses (and pedal movements) you used to produce the song. Your other software (using the "soundfonts") generates audio from those key-presses. It seems that it's not interpreting the "pedal-up" and "pedal-down" instructions correctly.

If _I_ owned a P155 (which has a pretty good sound generator), I'd want to save the _sound_ it generated.

The way I suggested (using Audacity) does that.

I have a P-155. I am still trying to find the "sweet spot" in the recording process.

I use the Line-Out to a Focusrite 2i2, then USB to computer. I had some issues with my Line-In on the computer. I record my playing on the keyboard (USER00x), then play it back into Audacity (or some other recording software).

You will need to play around with the volume settings on the keyboard and/or gain level to get the right recording level (no peaking). I am still working at this. I then use Audacity's "amplify" effect to bring the volume up.

I would not use "normalize" as the pianoclues instructions suggest. From my extensive research, most piano recorders (Kyle Landry, etc) use "amplify". "Normalize" does something to the wave pattern, where as "amplify" just increases the wave amplitude.

It can be a frustrating process.

Thanks for all your responses! I do have a question about the sustain pedal. When I listen to the unchanged MIDI file, I can hear the sustain pedal and everything being pressed. However when I use LMMS and the soundfont to convert it, the sustain is not heard. Is there something else I need to do to bring out the sustain (perhaps tweaking certain settings?)
