Okay, so maybe I have a little too much time on my hands this morning... grin Let's see if anyone can figure out what piano this could be.

<edit> - I uploaded a pic but am unable to view it in the message. If I can't get it to show up, this guessing process may take a while.

<re-edit> - Sorry for dragging this out, darn customers keep interrupting me, lol!

Hi Tom,

Attachments usually do not work very well for some reason. All I see is a box with a red X.

Can you post a digital photo?

Rick

Yeah, weird isn't it? Everything looked like it uploaded fine but clearly it didn't.

Hi Tom,

This might be of help. Posting photos is one of the most confusing aspects of this forum board.

I'm looking forward to checking out the Wazzit!

I just got your PM, Tom, and sent you a reply;

In the meantime, try this...

If your pic is located on a website, open it so you see the pic. Right click on the pic and select "properties". Then, copy the URL address (starting with http and ending with jpg).

Next, go to the full-reply screen on the post window. Left click on the 4th icon from the left and click "enter a non-floating image"; now, paste your pic URL address in that drop-down space bar and click OK.

You will not see your pic there, but if you click on "I want to preview this message" at the bottom of the post window, you will see it.

Good luck!

Rick

The trapwork is identical to Steinway. It looks like a new Hamburg M to me.

It could be an O. That may be more likely, given the ratio of the width to the length.

With the improvements made in the NY Steinways recently, it might well be a USA built O.

That's my vote.

If so, it will be nice to know that they make the undersides with good workmanship in NY now, so that they don't have to hide it with black paint.

Using some very recent 'underside' info, I'll go for American S&S-0.

If it is a Steinway, it is Hamburg. Round holes for the lyre braces!

LOL! Now THAT is funny! Did the staff there have any questions about what the heck you were doing?

My original plan was to offer the winner a new car. That unfortunately fell through when I realized that I had neither the car nor the extra $$ to pay for a car to give away.

I'm hoping you'll settle for a hearty "well done, sir!".

I do like the new shinny finish on the new NY Steinways with the clear belly. Quality seem to be much improved from just a few years back. Love the new action, now much closer to the quality of a Hamburg. I wish they don't leave the inside rim satin black though. The should do the wood veneer like everybody else. It's about time. Oh, and NY shouldn't charge $10,000 more for shinny black finish over the satin finish. Just saying.

I'm not an expert in finishing, but there's probably a reason it costs that much more. FWIW, they offer hi-gloss poly for much less than hi-gloss lacquer.

I think the clear finished wood veneer inner rim looks cheap with a solid color finish. Does not match. Shows poor cabinetmaking esthetics. Simply out of place and does not match the overall visual context.

There is no worse crime than bad taste! Murder is in bad taste!

Okay, I’ve had this on my mind and have thought about posting a question about it more than a few times, but was hesitant; I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade… smile

However, my curiosity has got the best of me, so here goes…

In the photo of the new Steinway O that shows the bichord bass strings and agraffes near the tenor break, I noticed that the length of the copper windings are not perfectly matched on a few notes. I thought the relationship between the speaking lengths and the copper windings were supposed to be evenly spaced/matched on the bichord bass strings? In that photo, some are and some are not…

That aspect of matching bass string pairs must not be that critical after all.

Rick

Rick - I noticed that also. I made the assumption that the slight discrepancy would also appear at the tail end of the winding. Then the bi-chord strings would be the same. When it is such a close up photo, it points out something in a very magnified way.

I, too, am interested if this would have an effect on the evenness of the tonal scale.

You guys really have an eye for the detail! Now I have to take a peek at my piano out of curiosity.
