By the way, there was no mention today in the New York Times of the Cliburn Competition results, nor is there any mention on their on-line site as of now. Plenty of space was dedicated on both about yesterday's Tony Awards.

In fact, there has not been any coverage at all about the competition apart from the feature article they ran on May 18, "With Cliburn Gone, Competition Tries To Adjust."

A far cry from the paper that helped make Van Cliburn a star by running daily reports from the 1958 Tchaikovsky Competition!

Just as a side note, was anyone amused with how the awards ceremony was organized? It seemed a little chaotic at times. Nothing too major though. Haha I was very amused when the chairman dropped the 3rd place trophy to give to Chen. He stood there trying to hold the two pieces together like nothing happened. wink

I heard Kholodenko's Petruschka on the radio today on WQXR. That didn't take long.

Somehow, I don't think that it gets a full dress rehearsal. grin

I noticed that too, also along with the L.A times. Funny how something in our own little world (of a few thousand people), feels bigger than the olympics, but it's not even given mention by society at large.

there was an initial article in NYT fleshing out Cliburn's absence in this year's competition and the changes ensuing.. That was it..

One of my favorite sites, the Huffington Post, didn't have anything on it for the past two and a half weeks until they finally posted an AP article about Kholodenko winning today. I left a comment questioning their lack of coverage, as if they care.

I wouldn't be surprised if the NY Times reports the result in a few days. Their musical reviews are always a few days after a concert. One cannot compare the VCC to the Tonys, which are on prime time TV with millions of viewers, in terms of the necessity to report things in a very timely fashion.

NPR's "Morning Edition" had an excellent report this morning. On the cutaway, our local station followed up with some local ties.

Definitely a very likeable guy.

Ha! That's hilarious. I wonder what was going through his mind. I'm sure my mind would be completely fried if I just played through all those √Čtudes.

I enjoyed Kholodenko's playing ever since he programmed 'China Gates'. It's exciting that he values some of the newer repertoire. Without the creation and performance of quality new music, classical music will fade away.

No, his father tied for 5th, Nikita Mndoyants finished unranked (4th, 5th and 6th places were not ranked).

I wasn't surprised to see no coverage in the NYT. When they do cover the Cliburn, they treat it as something happening out in "the provinces"...their only article about it was extremely snide. I'll be looking forward (more or less) to Wilkinson's documentary.

If anybody cares, this is a trailer of a documentary the sister of my former piano teacher made in ~2001

The trailer shows a short bit of Nikita Mndoyants at 9 years of age.

Cool! Thanks for posting it -- interesting!

BTW to me it's way more than just a "short bit"! And it reminds us how unusually gifted most if not all of these extraordinary pianists are. At 9, he was playing that piece way better than probably most of us could play it at any age. (I know -- I tried.) grin

Oh no. In one of the photo galleries of one of the papers there's a slight wardrobe malfunction on a certain performer in a very sparkly dress.

I feel like I should protect her now.

Obviously, the photographer didn't see it. And it's not obvious, it's like when someone says, "Look, there's a deer at the edge of the forest." And you say, "Where?" And then you look harder, and you see how well the deer blends in with the foliage.

It just fits in with the "wardrobe malfunction" theme. I'm still curious about the glittering in the glitter spangled forest.
