Casio. Now, I haven`t a clue as to what it was except it said "Privia" somewhere on it. Shopkeeper didn`t know; there were a lot o` things he didn`t know. And there wasn`t a proper piano seat in the shop (my missus wanted to sit down; I had to stand most o` the time.

It was loud. And the keyboard was pretty good. But THIS caught my attention. And that of the Wife. She wanted it . . .A straight strung Grand, with a super light playing action. (she has arthritis in her hands amongst other places . . Beautiful instrment to look at. I didn`t get to play it.

The price? £7K!! I have been told this is more than reasonable . . .

Nice looking old piano...

If your wife likes it and you all have room for it, I say go for it! smile

Thing is, if you ever decide to sell, it might be hard to get rid of... but that is just my guess.

Gook luck!

Rick

We haven`t the room; I think she`d have a Baby if we had. A baby grand that is . . .but there`s something about the straight strung aspect looks soooo good . . . like a 6 cyl inline engine . . .

It is very beautiful. You must tell us how it sounds when you and your wife play it. A straight strung Erard from that period will always be of interest, even if it is only for its historical value.

Find out as much as you can about it. Length, specifics about the action, who rebuilt/refinished it, etc. Piano World has many members who can be helpful with their knowledge of "pre-modern" instruments.

For those in the USA, the equivalent in dollars would be approx. $10,750.

Here is a composition which is closer to the period of the instrument played on a similar Erard:

You should be aware of the drawbacks of an antique piano like that: Parts are delicate and difficult to replicate if they break, tuning is not likely to be as stable, finding someone capable to work on it properly is hard, and at best, the actions are quite coarse compared to modern actions. If you can live with all that, you should have it inspected by someone who really knows what to look for and be aware of everything that has been done to it, because you can bet that a lot of things have been done to it.

My piano teacher has a rebuilt Kirkman (straight strung) that is delightful to play. The keys respond to such a light touch you almost get the feeling the music plays itself.
