Make Music New York: 175 Keyboards on Cornelia Street
Make Music New York, the largest annual musical event in the city’s history, returns for a seventh year with hundreds of free, outdoor, public concerts all around the city on Friday, June 21, the first day of summer.
This year, MMNY will present a world premiere composition by pianist Jed Distler for 175 battery-powered Yamaha keyboards on Cornelia Street in the West Village. The performance will set a new Guinness Book record for the world’s largest keyboard ensemble. Following the performance, Yamaha will donate all of the keyboards to the NYC Department of Education.
The 30 minute piece will be performed twice, in the late morning and early afternoon, along with a run through earlier in the day. The music is extremely easy to perform and coordinate, and there are even parts for those without any keyboard skills (other than to put your hands on a keyboard, and push certain buttons to generate different sounds). More advanced players will be the leaders, and must come to a rehearsal the day before (in Greenwich Village, time TBD.)
