I'm going to be buying a new "artist" style bench. I have a Yamaha G2 and the stock bench is horrendous. cry

What are some good brand names besides Janson? I don't really have $700 to spend...

Hi Joel,

Jansen is indeed the standard in the US. You are right, they are expensive. Here is a thread you might be interested in:

I disagree that they are expensive. Cheap Chinese imports have completely distorted what we perceive as a reasonable price to pay for something.

When you look at the hardware underneath a Jansen there is no comparison with the cheaper benches. There is a lot of heavy duty metal in there!

Think about purchasing your bench from a piano technician. Many professional techs have an account with Jansen and they can usually match any online price.

I absolutely agree. A Jansen bench can probably outlast the person who buys it, if it's taken care of properly.

Much has to do with how many hours per week you'll be sitting on it. With a Jansen you wont have any issues if you plan on playing for hours on end but if you don't then you may not need to spend that much. CS imports has cheaper Chinese (found on Amazon & Ebay) ones that are of descent construction, look good and adequate for casual use.

The point is: JoelW has stated that he doesn't have the cash to buy a Jansen. That's the reality, not the fantasy.

Someone considering a Samick is usually not ready to buy to a Steingraeber, or save up for years to attain a piano dream. It works the same with benches.

Sorry to disagree, but the CS Imports bench that I purchased and quickly returned years ago was of very poor quality. I would not recommend them.

Norbert,

The "Estonia" bench looks lovely. Who makes it and how much does it cost?

Are you referring to CPS Imports? They don't make benches, they just sell them. They have all different qualities, up to, and including, Jansen. Do you have a specific bench manufacturer, or model, to avoid?

Just as shopping for a piano, one should not fall into the same trap as "All Chinese pianos are .............." They need to be evaluated individually.

You are correct. It was a piano chair (memory slipping), not bench that I ordered that was of poor quality. It was six or seven years ago. They did agree to take it back w/o any issues.

China has come along with in the past years and like all countries they can make descent to good stuff if they want. If you go to Amazaon and check reviews you will see mostly positive, same with Ebay. Not 600 dll quality but nice enough get the casual player by without butt cramps. You could always modify it with slightly thicker higher density foam.
