Hi my name is Andrew Eisenberg. I am a 20 year old songwriter. Below are the links to three new compositions I wrote. I don't read music-- I do everything by ear (I am self taught) Any feedback / suggestions on the songs would be greatly appreciated.

Classical Piano Songs? wink

Don't sound very classical to me. The red flag, of course, is your use of the word "song" to describe a solo piano work.

Hi,

I'm not sure exactly what specific genre they would fall into. I don't have any training in classical music, so I'm sorry if you felt it is labeled incorrectly. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the songs!

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

If anything, your pieces would probably fall into some kind of genre like the "leider ohne worte", since they don't have a vocal line expressly written in to the part.

Mendelssohn wrote a bunch of those, and sort of invented the genre in the 19th century. Have you heard or played any of those?

The distinction in the classic genre is that, a song has a vocal part and words of some kind. A "piano piece" does not, unless of course you are trying to imitate Mendelssohn. I know this seems rather arbitrary but, if you want to learn more about it, look up "lieder" or "art song" in Wikipedia to see why we are making the distinction. The "classical" category has some very important antecedents for the art song or lieder in Schubert most of all, who single-handedly invented the genre. All those who came after him including Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Wolff, and the French School/Symbolist-Surrealist Poets of the early 20th century were only trying to copy and expand what Schubert accomplished in his too-short life.

Mendelssohn was only trying to imitate this compositional form in a piano solo context of arrangement, in imitation of what Schubert did but with the vocal line incorporated into the piano part.

Let us know what you think!

Hi Andrew,

Your songs would indeed qualify as songs without words. For someone who's self taught your ideas have some merit. My question is if you're interested in writing music why not get some education in music theory? Your songs are very simple. You're posting these on a forum where almost everyone reads music and has studied piano, some music theory and some of us even music history. My challenge was how to comment on your pieces in a way that would be helpful to you. Simply put, what you've posted shows some talent, but your talent needs to be developed.
