There's a possibility I may need to put my Boston piano GP-156 PE in climated-controlled storage for 2-3 years due to moving overseas. I know this isn't ideal but my only other option is to try and sell the piano back on consignment because I don't know anyone who can keep it for me in their house for length of time. How hard is this on the piano or would it just be better to sell it?

May help if you specify your location. There's gotta be somebody out there who could find it in their hearts to take in a poor, homeless GP-156 PE for a few years.

It's OK to play it while it's in "storage", right?

I think if you could find a pianist who was saving for a new piano and needed a stop gap, that would be ideal. They could agree to pay for regular maintenance and have the piano fully serviced before it was returned to you to reverse the use it got, and they could save for their piano in the meantime.

Hi BP,

Usually, not being played is not a problem for a piano. You mentioned climate-controlled storage. Usually that only applies to temperature and not to stable humidity control. That's the piano killer, not the temp. Often piano dealerships offer proper storage conditions.

One of the important things is your location. Humidity stabilization changes from climate to climate.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm in Denver so the humidity is pretty stable here. Would I need to arrange to have it tuned while it's in storage? I hadn't thought of checking the piano dealerships, so I"ll look into that. Out of all the things to worry about with this possible move, making sure my piano is taken care of is causing me the most anxiety!!

I beg to differ - I live in Fort Collins - without a humidifier, my house runs between 15-20% in the winter and 35-40% in the summer. I now run two different humidifiers to keep the humidity stable.

Good luck finding a temporary home!
