And who said one usually doesn't win big international past the age of 25? Happy for Kholodenko, though I'm unsure - I'll have to listen more, but from all I heard, Rana would've been my first pick.

I'm 3 for 3! And Huangci for the discretionary prize and Kholo for the "Birichino". Not too shabby.

Well folks, it's been real. Time for me to go play 2 notes on the piano and then cry for half an hour.

I guess the agenda of the judges was to honor the best pianists.

Imagine that...

Well, I got the first place right and switched the other two.

How many more posts do we think this thread will get before it dies? Closest guess gets a cash prize of 20 thousand dollars, and concert tours for the 3 seasons following the...

Never mind.

Am so relieved that they didn't repeat the debacle of the 2009 Cliburns.

Well, I'll be thrilled if I have the opportunity to see any of these medal winners in concert in my area. I saw Haochen Zhang a few years ago and was quite favorably impressed.

thumb thumb

And thumbs up to the judges too.
They do a great job much more than they get credit for, and they sure did this time.

And so did we. smile
We fought and dueled and came at it from all different directions, but wound up pretty much coalescing on the top 3, including from hearing one another and how we battled it out. This has been a great discussion, and we'll probably be having good P.S.'s on it for some time.

I looked up the Pianostreet 2013 Cliburn thread - it looks like they have a whopping 38 posts, as opposed to our measly 4012.

Well, results exactly as I would have predicted, and I have no beef with them although my preference was for Rana.

For Jury Discretionary Award I would have swapped Gillham for Lin.

Touching side note ---

Kholodenko's bio-father skipped out on the family when Vadim was 1 & 1/2. They only met last year and Kholo said he hoped his father would come see him perform, as his step-dad was in Ukraine. After the awards, that was Kholo's dad on stage with him.

Thanks for that -- a great addition to the story.

Thank God for boring speeches and juror bios. Otherwise, my "me too" to BZ4 might have been too late.

Thanks to all of you for a stimulating and educational time. More fun than practicing, which resumes as soon as I've slept this one off.

Best Gowns: Lindsay Garritson (awarded by Neiman-Marcus)

I'm away from home and missed Chen. But based on everyone else's reactions, I'm going with this lineup (excepg for the gown , as to which I have no opinion). It sounds razor thin based on the level of enthusiasm, Chen has to medal. I think Dana mainly on the consistently high quality of her solo performances.

Just read Kholodenko wrote the cadenzas for Mozart on the plane trip.
