I've been away "forever" not geting back into this...

One question. Has anyone experience with IK Multimedia's "iGrand" app? It runs on IOS devices like the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Cost is $20 but there is a free version you you can try before you buy.

I like the idea of not needing to use a computer. Maybe there is a better soubding IOS piano around. I don't know. here are links to the product and Youtube demo.

Welcome back Chris!

I *believe* iGrand is considered among the best piano apps currently available for iOS.

Cheers,
James

The iGrand app and its pianos are OK, for the price and the convenience. Same with Sampletank. IMHO they are (all) better than GarageBand. They do have some controls to adjust tone, but they lack some of the (basic) features of most DP's and VST's; key down sympathetic resonance as one example.

If you just want to connect and practice, they are OK, especially SampleTank which has hundreds of instruments, rhythms, etc, but in reality there is no real advantage over your inbuilt DP sound unless it really sucks. You have to purchase 'in-app' additional sounds beyond the basics.

I don't use the iGrand or SampleTank pianos, despite having paid for them, but do use SampleTank EP's and organs; even though they are below par compared to good DP's and software, they just compete well on price and are all I have.

My local College now uses SampleTank on its music technology course.

So if you are willing to put up with less than perfect sound, and use them for mostly practice, then for the price (and size) they are OK. Most people, on here at least are after 'perfection' and would soon move on as they are not (yet?) up there with DP's and VST's.

I'm trying to understand this fascination with miniaturization. I have a friend who thinks it's cool gig with iRig mini keyboards and iTouch/iPad. I thought the whole idea of VSTs was to have samples that are much bigger than DPs.

I think it's convenience? I have a laptop, PC, iPad, iPhone, Android phone. I played around with VST's on the laptop and PC. Connecting up the iPad and using SampleTank is quicker and more convenient than using a VST on the laptop. (..and cheaper, in money and sound).

I figured the sound would not be up to what I have on the Mac but the iPad touch is tiny and Apple is selling off the 4th generation model for $129 and the basic paino app is all of about $5

Why? The Advant Grand is nicer but you can't cary it around in a shoulder bag. I already have a collection of samplers I can use in Logic but I was wondering if there was a agreement of which is the "best" IOS piano app. I agree IK Multimedia is better than the Pianos in Garage Band but GB is so good otherwise it can justify the purchase of an iPad, just to run GB.

Is there anything better than the IK Multimedia stuff?

Ive been curious about iGrand for sometime and finally bought it. I like the idea of a VST via iPad. I did not purchase the recommended iRig. I bought a $24 usb adapter that works fine. IMO I think iGrand sounds very good* and well worth $19.99. Edit functions work well. Only problem is no half damper - at least not that I can detect/find. Still very enjoyable piano's. Worth trying the free download just to hear it for yourself.

Edit Reason: * "sounds very good" keep in mind that I am running iGrand through a mixer and using good headphones.

My set up, when I use it, is similar. I also did not purchase iRig adapter but an equivalent from LINE6. Works fine. I feed the sound from iPad into a separate speaker system and not back into the DP.

As per my earlier comments, there is no string resonance, as well as no half pedal, but for the price the sounds can be entertaining to explore and make a change if your ears get tired from your own DP. More fun than serious, and I can't see the purists on here giving their approval. smile

With increasing chip power in newer iPads it will be interesting to see if these evolve into more serious competition with software PC VST's. There is another evolution occurring with under 10's who lack PC skills but can and do use iPxd's (and Android devices), so marry that with education (used in my local College), who knows where this will go.
