I picked up a copy of Reblitz when I bought my Conover upright about 30 years ago. I am concerned that the book may be outdated regarding glues. Is hide glue still preferred for reassembling wood to wood action components? I see that tight bond has a liquid hide glue.
The piano is now nearly 125 years old so I expect to have to rework all of the actions after such a long piano life. The action is out right now waiting for a Jack Flange to be reglued to a Wippen, which separated without anyone actually playing the piano.
After a few years in storage, I went thru the complete regulation process, and while tightening the many screws, found a broken brass rail butt plate, which I have replaced. So, I will be replacing all butt plates while reconditioning the action.

125 year old action parts? Those should probably be replaced. Barring that, yes, you want to use hot hide glue. Why? Because it is reversible. Regular wood glue would probably be ok in a pinch. Titebond's cold hide glue has a very long cure time, so I wouldn't use it for this application.

Thank you. I have been looking for ground hide glue for sale, and see the complication of the gram strength variation. I have seen numbers like 164, 192, 251 and 315, with the strength of the joint going up with the numbers, and the working time going down. From what I have read, I am guessing that for gluing the jack flange to the wippen, I probably should use the 251 gram strength. Any comments on this?

The only type of ground hide glue that Pianotek Supply Co. sells is 251, so I'd just go with that.

Regular yellow glue will work just fine.
