Hello all

After a very enjoyable afternoon on the 5th floor of the Yamaha showroom in Tokyo I have an NU1 on order.

Even though the sound through speakers seems very good, clearly there is a limit to what one can expect from the inbuilt amp and speakers.

Has anyone hooked up one of these (or the other N's) to higher end hifi / speakers / subwoofers (I have Chord amps, B&W speakers, Velodyne subs)?

Alt are there any really good monitor speakers that would make a significant difference to the quality - many years of playing with hifi have taught me that it's so easy to spend big money on utterly marginal sound improvements.

This feeds into the question of whether the samples in the NU1 have been recorded to a quality level that would benefit from such an exercise.

It won't take long to hook up once it arrives, but if someone's done it and been disappointed it would curtail my scheming...

Hi,
indeed, I conneted my NU1 to my HIFI system andI must says: it sounds really better than with only the onboard speakers.
The sound is then much more closer to what you can feel from a real piano: broader
I also have then the feeling to have a more fine control of the sound produced..
I have also tried to connect to monitors: the yamaha HS50, but the sound was not as good as with my hifi system.
I placed the speakers on the top of the piano..it is not so nice, but sounds so good

I have JBL ES30 as HIFI speaker and no subwoofer: it is not necessary.
I have tried to add one, but then the sound is too boomy
But with monitors like the HS50, I use it (on my other DP which is a FP 80)

Cheers

Good question and only hooking things up will you know for sure. One consideration is that you need to be sure to match the external speaker impedence with that of the amp in the NU1. Also, you might make sure that manipulating the sound system as you describe does not void the warranty. I would think that appropriate external speakers should have a frequency response somewhere around 30hz to 20Khz range. You might check the NU1 manual for the impedence on the stock NU1 speakers. Good luck.
