I am looking for any information that you can give on this piano. It is extremely unique for several reasons, most notably the wood acoustic "grille" that rests between the lid and the strings. I had the piano completely restored about 15 years ago, but it was a family heirloom and I have very little info on it. Is this as rare of a piano as I think it is? I had been told that they only made 100 anniversary piano's in each year of 1932, 1937, 1942 and 1947. The wood appears to be mahogany and it has been stained blonde. I cannot seem to find any info at all on it. Help!

Can't give you any information. But,I looked at the pictures of your piano and have to say I've never seen anything like it. Very unique!!!

A lot of companies in the '30s made fairly small grands with wooden grilles over the harp. Most were half-moon shaped, and had a very art-deco appearance. This looks like a variation of that, as it is somewhat closer to a normal grand shape. Most of these had a fairly weak tone because of their small size, and they're rare because very few people were buying pianos, let alone fancy art-deco baby grands, in the Great Depression. Edelweiss is now making a half-moon piano with a similar concept. Other than that, that's all I know.
Here's an example of one made by Wurlitzer

There was another thread regarding the same type of S&C piano yesterday. Starbird music in Portland Maine has one on their website in the used grand piano section.

I like these art deco type pianos and have several myself including 3 with consecutive serial numbers. What are the chances of finding that.

now THAT is something I've never seen before!!! My piano is definitely Art Deco in style. It is 5'6" in length. The sound is rich and mellow, not as bright as it would be without the grille on. The grill is easily removed, but the only support arm in attached to it, so you could never open the piano up without it (and it is so neat, I'd never want to display the piano that way!) I am mostly looking for production numbers, or a Story & Clark historian who can tell me more than I needed to know about it! I collect antiques and like having as much back story as possible! smile

can you link the thread? I just joined this forum today! Do you know how limited the production was on this?

here is one too, but if this is date is correct, then that means that the information that I have on it being an anniversary model is incorrect...

Is there a serial number on it? You could use it to find out it's exact age.

Hi Rob - Welcome to Piano World!

It may be an anniversary issue, but certainly not the 75th.

Here is a link to the S&C serial number listing:

the sides and back with that banding remind me of a 1930s Philco console radio
