one question about the carbon fibre action, how much better it actually is over conventional wooden action?

What's the lowest price for GE30?

Hi there,

I've a Kawai K-15 E upright with the ABS action and it plays really well - you wouldn't notice the difference between it and a traditional all-wood action. Mine does feature some wood too though as it happens.

I recently played some Steingraeber grands with carbon fibre actions and they were beautiful - extremely fluid and easy to control. Then again, this was a Steingraeber which is at a completely different end of the spectrum to my Kawai upright (which is about £40,000 cheaper!).

The main benefit of carbon fibre is they aren't subject to shrinking/swelling and expanding like a traditional all-wood action would be.

In short, the carbon fibre actions still play just as well as a traditional action and to be honest, you can't really notice much of a difference. I wouldn't hesitate having one and it wouldn't put me off buying a piano either.

Here in the UK, I would estimate one would pay between £9,500-£12,000 for a brand new Kawai GE30 grand. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what this would be in USD.

Hope this all helps though. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask - I'm here to help!

William

Zhengy4,

You don't indicate what country, state, province, or city you're in - that makes a huge difference when it comes to pricing.

Regarding the M3 action, I imagine it would be more stable over time and through the seasons. If you like the feel, then I think the technology is a bonus. If you don't like how it feels, then the technology doesn't matter...

I'm not sure how expensive $15,000 is considered for a Kawai GE30 in the US. However, I would anticipate that that price is near to correct, give or take a couple of thousand.

Kawai's GE30 is their largest 'consumer' grade grand piano. It is identical in size to the RX-1. The RX series of Kawai pianos are considered their 'professional' range. Differences between the GE30 and RX-1 will include things like cosmetics (as you can tell, both instruments are rather different looking) - most notably straight-edge legs on the GE30, a straight lid edge as opposed to a bevelled one and there are other features too. If I'm correct, the rim of the GE30 is thinner than the RX-1 too.

Although the instruments are mainly within the same in price range, you will pay a few thousand more for an RX-1 due to it being under Kawai's 'professional' range of instruments.

Obviously, a lot has changed since 2008 and much like the UK, I'm sure prices for things have soared in the US too. I'd like to think for you, you'd be able to buy a brand new GE30 for less than $15,000.

I advise you do some searching round. Contact your local piano dealers, if they are an approved Kawai dealer ask what their prices are for a brand new GE30. If not, still ask what they think you could get a brand new GE30 for.

Choosing a piano isn't an easy decision and shouldn't be rushed by any means. Take your time and do not hesitate to try out any piano offered to you at all.

Check out the used market too - you'll get a lot more for your money. You'd probably be able to find an RX-1 for the same sort of money that's several years old.

Edit: I forgot to mention the difference between the GE30 and the GM12. The GM12 is Kawai's smallest baby grand of the 'consumer' grade products. It's only 5' in length. The GE30 is the largest - it's 5'5". The GE30 is of a higher spec too. I've played Kawai's GM12 equivalent here in the UK - the GM10 - it's not a bad piano at all. However, due to it being a small piano, the bass lacks a bit. The treble sounds nice and you can make the piano sing. By all means, a very good introductory piano. However, if you've got the space and money, I highly recommend the GE30 anyday.
