Hi all,

I was wondering what options are available to host monthly studio classes considering I do not have an adequate space myself. I am interested in what other traveling teachers' experience has been with this topic. I also would prefer the location to be free.

Thanks!

Quite a few home teachers lack the space to hold group classes, like myself. The best places I have found are churches and church halls as long as they have a piano. Most will charge a modest rate or maybe just ask for donations but presuming you will be charging your students for the class it should more than cover it.

A student's home? I have held small group classes and recitals at students' homes.

Yes. People who pay the premium for a teacher to come to *their* house tend to be wealthier and therefore have larger houses which could fit a class or recital. I have taken advantage of this in the past.

Ask your local piano dealer if they offer the showroom for such purposes. Sometimes they'll gladly trade foot traffic in the store (plus potential customers) in return for a free room rental.

Good responses here. I would consider a church or piano store or community centre before a student's home, though, simply because of the ongoing business relationship you have with a family. Something could easily go awry, and then it could become awkward. Or worse, you lose a student.

Good point, Peter. Not offering refreshments of any kind helps minimize "things going awry", I have found. No lingering after the group class.
