We at VIP Piano Club wish to have a short (5 minutes or less) high quality video done by a piano technician, giving your unbiased opinion about pianos in general. This will be displayed to our piano student families at various locations across the United States. Currently, we have a budding presence in Burbank California and Portland Oregon. The video should/would include:
* A welcome greeting to VIP Piano Club's members
* Your credentials
* Talking about the differences between tuning and regulation
* Giving an accurate assessment of how new pianos of every brand are not always necessarily regulated to factory standards and what that means
* Explaining how less expensive pianos can sometimes be altered to a higher quality than sent out of the factory
* Any myths about buying pianos you'd like to dispel
* A fun piano fact for everyone to know

This can be short and sweet and posted at your own YouTube site if you wish, demonstrating your value to your own potential clients. I'm open to a variety of techs making a video to show a diverse perspective.

Thank you so much for considering this! You can reach me direct at 503-290-6671 to ask any questions.

That is a very good idea.

5 minutes should be a tad short however (non realistic).

Number of speech of the sort have been done for students in universities. I do not know if the CAUT list is still up (technicians in Universities)

I have some sort of texts and frames to such conference (in French unfortunately).

About 30 minutes if memory serves, (and it is really not much)

Due to the "history part" . Keeping focused on technical points and maintenance/tuning/voicing can shorten that to 15 minutes probably. A difficult job on concision...

Best wishes

The term factory standard is the problem - factory standards can be very low on a particular brand, low on some entry level, high on some entry level pianos, there is no such thing as "factory standard".

Tuning, regulation AND voicing...

Those sort of short explanations are very useful .

Here are some in French , written :

Why not have a local tech come and give a presentation? Much easier than a video to do, and there can be a question answer interaction.

VIP, "unbiased opinion" is an oxymoron. So you may want to clarify with more details about what you want the lecture to accomplish and who the audience is.

Also, how much does this lecturing gig pay?

Yea, how many thousands of dollars will be offered for all that work?

I like Bob's idea. Just hire a local tech to give a short presentation.

Yes. I can't put my finger on exactly WHY it seems strange. 'Gonna' crack some psychology and philosophy books to see if I can anchor my feelings to something respectable. laugh

VIP can correct me if I'm wrong here...

I think VIP is setting up a chain of piano schools, so he wants a video that he can show at each of them.

That's fine, but if you (the technician) are starting the video by greeting VIP's students, then it's possible this video will have VIP "branding" in/on it. In other words, it will become part of the VIP curriculum.

As a technician, you might feel like you're indirectly endorsing VIP's teaching method or schools. Or you might not, depending on how the video is done and used. Or depending on you.

In any case, you ought to be compensated for it.

I don't think it's strange, but it's a little unusual for PW.

I think VIP is a business looking to hire a piano technician to do a bit of freelance video lecturing that will help VIP market its schools.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, for a technician whose business is in the same geographic area as VIP's schools, it may be a nice opportunity to reach more piano owners.

But it isn't like most postings here on PW, i.e. an individual looking for free help, advice or information.

That's my interpretation of it, for what it's worth.

I think it is odd that some unknown (to most of us) organization posts and simply starts to ask for things.

How about a little common etiquette?

Introduce yourself, tell us about yourself as a person, and about your business organization. What is your background, how long have you been doing this, what is your intention, what is your focus/market target group, etc, etc.

You can hardly expect someone to jump on your "offer" of letting them produce a video for you (free of charge!) with no disclosure.

If it is a charity or non-profit deal then maybe you can find a taker, but for a for-profit enterprise, I don't know why anyone would go through all the effort to do work that you would normally pay thousands for if you contracted it out.

I don't read where the OP states this is to be completed for free.

I don't think he's "asking" for things. I think a few people here started offering him information and advice because they didn't understand his posting.

I think he's looking to hire one or more technicians to do one or more video mini-lectures that he'll use in his piano school business.

Given the scope he mentioned (I'm not sure what you can accomplish in 5 minutes, though) I doubt if it would pay thousands of dollars, but I assume he expects to pay something.

It would be nice if he gave more details of his project, but he has given a phone number for interested people to call.

Basically, it's a job posting. Nothing wrong with that, IMHO.

Gee, you guys are a tough crowd!

Regarding any videos made, the author of original work is entitled to compensation.

Two basic ways this is accomplished;

A one-time fee for release of the video played as many times as the buyer would like.

The other common way is if the author wants to retain publishing rights, then a royalty is paid every time the video is played.

It seems to be either solicitation or a job posting, both of which are not allowed in PW forums. The OP has not returned to answer questions. Without any further information, rather than conjecture, the purpose can't be identified and remains a rather unusual posting, to say the least.
