Here's a piano that I played at a gig last night. I've been told it was made in 1935. Can any of you tell me anything about it? Thanks.

Hi Al,

It was built in 1929. It's hard to tell from the photo, but it might be a Model B or C.

How does it sound and play? Has any work been done on it?

Although it looks like it could be larger, I think the letter above the serial number is A, which at this time was the stretch A-III at 6'4 1/2". And the case looks just like one that I currently have.

Nick,

Are the rims that thick on an A-III? That's one of the reasons I thought it might be a C.

Thanks, you guys are amazing.

It's had a good bit of work done on it over the years, and it plays very well. I like the action. Some pianos are magic, and make me play a lot better. This one is almost in that category.

Click here for a recording from last night ("Blue Monk").

Many of the tops of the keys have been replaced. They tune it twice a year, and it sits with a blanket and heater in this old town hall.

They said it had been tuned a few weeks ago, but there were a few notes that were out of tune.

Marty,

Yes it looks the same. It also has a lip going around the upper edge.

However, to judge the thickness of the rim I often point out that this should be examined from underneath the piano which reveals the combined thickness of the inner and outer rims.

Greetings,
by the 5 bichords on the treble bridge, it seems it would be an A, and looking at the serial number, I would guess the larger one. It is nearly impossible to judge a piano's tone on a recording.
Regards,
