As posted on KC, in response to a request for samples of the new EQ'd Grand that's available for downoad from the Casio Music Forum site.

Quote:
I've posted a few examples of the new EQ'd Grand on SoundCloud. I noodled around on a couple of tracks to try to make sure that the problematic areas of the samples were prominent in places, and picked up the Real Book for a couple of standards with fairly prominent melody lines (apologies to the jazzers - I'm definitely fake when it comes to that stuff).

I didn't tweak the file settings at all. Hope this helps those who needed to hear more of the AP, now that alternative files are available.

EDIT: I think this was actually CncrtGrd SRE.ZPF from Brad MZ-2000. I got confused with the settings.

Whoops! Thanks for putting that right, Mike, and for the comment. That particular stage setting has a really nice ambiance.

Edit: I've amended my first post so that the link is active.

Very nice voxpops, you play quite well! Thanks for going to all the trouble of recording and posting that.

Thanks for all the kind comments - but the object of the exercise was to highlight the new piano file rather than my purposeless meanderings! (Well, not entirely purposeless, as I wanted to play in a style that could expose weaknesses, and so avoided rock or very dense passages). I'd be curious how people think it compares to the stock grand, and whether the "plinkiness" has become more acceptable with the brighter EQ setting. My personal view is that, although the same issue persists in the upper mids (as the sample itself hasn't changed), it blends better into a brighter sound.

I'm still getting used to the characteristics of the instrument, and learning how to control it. It's actually capable of being very expressive, but needs careful handling or else velocity values can rise very quickly (using the default velocity curve, which I prefer).

Oh no! I think I may have screwed up. crazy I think the stuff I recorded was not using the new EQ'd piano based on Jim Alfredson's work, but Brad MZ-2000's CncrtGrd SRE.ZPF. This is what he says about it:

Quote:
This is a modification of the factory preset Stage Setting "0-0 Concert Grand". It has a shorter release time allowing for cleaner note separation during staccato play. I attempted to recreate the same note separation that I noticed in recordings of "Acoustic Piano's". This setting feels really choppy if your used to the original preset but after some time with it you will feel like the original release time was too long.

I've also tweaked the EQ. The low frequency's have been reduced and the high's increased for a brighter sound. Again, I was attempting to get the sound of a real acoustic recording.

I got confused when loading the files, as one is a new tone, and the other is a stage setting. Apologies to all, and particularly to the creators.

Regardless, a good representation of the piano sound. Not in the market here, but if I were, I could see being swayed by the demo. Thanks for going to the trouble vp.

Thanks JFP. Here are a few uninspired snippets of the intended patch: EQ'd Grand. They don't really do it justice, but you get a vague impression of what it's like.

That was good playing, and an excellent jazz piano sound. But listen to this from the AP450; Is there a huge difference? You`ll know the guy Mike . .

That is a really nice rendition of "Let It Be." The piano sounds very rich and full as well. I presume it's more like the default Concert Grand sound on both the PX-350 and the PX-5S, but possibly more refined???

It`s the dynamics that grabbed me. I can`t achieve anything like that. On any piano! I think that`s down to him . . .clever b*****!

Max is a very talented player... and all around nice guy. That is one of the best interpretations I have ever heard. Bravo, Max!

It is nearly identical to the Concert Grand on the PX-5S. The PX-350 doesn't have all the nuances that are happening here (String Resonance, Key Release).

Max is an incredible player.
