Rules of the contest...

1. Piano must be new, with nationwide distribution.
2. Piano must be a vertical.
3. Piano must exhibit tone and touch of more expensive pianos.
4. Piano should exhibit some musicality.
5. Piano must exhibit some build quality and longevity.

A quality used piano? I bought a super nice Sohmer 45 upright for $500 that sounds better than a $7000 Schulze Pollman upright I bought new.

I know you said new, but if looking for value not sure why you wouldn't look at used.

Kawai K-15 E upright - that's what I've got! Solid spruce soundboard, great tone and action. Plays like a dream for a piano that's only a couple of thousand.

Wonder what the difference in the K-15 and the K-15E is, if any?

I like the Cunningham consoles. If they're not distributed nationally, your always welcome to move to the Philadelphia area.

I think there should be geographical zoning on what is considered cheap

California : Cheap is anything under 195,000.00

New York : 10 K

Washington DC 18 K

Tennessee : Cheap is anything under 50 bucks and you may get complaining even then.

Probably not a lot. I'm from the UK, I think the K-15 E is the European version and the K-15, the US version?

Either way, they're both 'console' pianos and I imagine are the same, if not, similar spec.

Charles Walter gets my vote. I've heard Perzina uprights are good but I have never come across one.

Well, when you factor in the lack of tuning and voicing costs, the Yamaha NU1 would win ... and in about the same foot print the Yamaha N1 would provide a grand piano action.

Cheap or inexpensive? wink

Cheap can exhibit criteria 1-4 but will always have some compromise about 5.

For me, inexpensive is better than cheap, but we do our very best to price them low.

For cheap, having good design, musical tone, and touch suitable for a late-intermediate player while exhibiting reasonable build quality, Hardman 117 Decorator Studio. No fancy branding and it only comes in brown mahogany, but IMO, it is the best cheap piano I've come across.

When it comes to inexpensive, just about anything Hailun builds (with any of their partnering brands) is in the running. 116, HU-1P, etc. These pianos are tough and musical. Our techs really like them.

LOL, thanks Marty! Got one of those, though ours is more a console model. Built like a tank to be sure. Would have to be to keep on kicking after what our boys have put it through wink

Well, as Del himself has noted, the length of bass strings is not necessarily the most important criterion for comparison.

wink
