Hi,
Has anyone ever attempted to transplant a keyboard between Roland's like these?

We have an HP-1700 which we like. I just acquired an HP-137 for $50. It has a hammer action keyboard. We have been trying to decide which one to keep and which one to sell. Then I thought wouldn't it be nice to transplant the hammer action keyboard into the 1700.

Before I open them up I wanted to see if anyone has done anything like this.

I have been inside the 137 already. I removed a few keys for cleaning where something had been spilled inside. I also cleaned the contact boards.

The 137 keyboard is screwed on through the bottom of the unit but the 1700 has no screws in the bottom so it must mount differently. That may or may not be a problem.

The other thing is the connectors on the contact boards, are they they same?

Any insight into this would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

I will answer my own post in case it helps anyone else.

I opened both pianos and compared them. The keyboards are quite different. I thought that if they used the same connectors on the contact boards it might work but they don't.

I thought maybe I could swap contact boards but looking at the keys and how they strike their respective contacts they seem quite different also. I didn't actually lift the keyboards to make a closer comparison let alone actually attempting a swap to see if they lined up. Just from looking from the side it looks like it wouldn't work.

So that's the end of that. We decided to keep the HP-1700 so I now have a Roland HP-137 for sale.

Just looked at your posting. I`ve had a similar idea for some time wi my GHS keyboard. It doesn`t seem so bad until I play something better . . . thought it might be simples, like . . . plugging in the new to existing identical connections. Dream on!
