I'm considering sending my 8 year-old son, who is very interested in classical music and a dedicated pianist, to Interlochen next summer. Considering either the Junior two week music camp or the four week advanced Junior music camp (if he can get in). Anyone sent any students there in recent years? Would welcome any feedback or thoughts about the program. Thanks!

Well, I attended as a student, my children attended. I worked on the staff their during my college years as did my wife, who also attended. We keep in touch with many friends there and visit frequently. It's a great program for many, but there are others who seem to get nothing from it and I have met prior students who disliked it intensely.

My general observation for the Junior division is that the more outgoing the personality, and the more adventuresome, tend to do best. At 9 yrs, probably the 2 week program would be better than the 4 week program. Just FYI, as a 6th grader, I had no problems with the 8 week session.

Feel free to PM me if you want more details.

Coincidentally, I also just looked at it in the past few days, with my younger child (8) in mind for next year. It's hard for me to say whether it's worthwhile at this age. The 2-week program doesn't seem to need audition so it's harder to assess the quality. They said on the website that advanced players are encouraged to apply for the 4-week program, but 4-week away from home is going to be tough for little kids.
