I'm a self-taught pianist of nine years and I enjoy playing Chopin very much. I recorded myself playing three of my favourite pieces from this composer. Can any of you criticize my playing and give suggestions on how to improve?

Etude Op. 10 no 3 in E Major (really mainstream)

Nocturne Op. 27 no 2 in D Flat Major

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K50mKjScB0I

Nocturne Op. 15 no 2 in F Sharp Major

Any comments are appreciated.

Honestly, you need to tune that piano and re-record those pieces. It's impossible for me to get beyond the Playskool quality of the instrument you are playing. The subject matter demands that at the very least.

Yeah, I also gave this a shot, but I can't tell if what I'm hearing is a product of the piano or your technique. I'm thinking it's at least a little of both, but it's really hard to tell, so while some comments might be on the mark, others might be wildly afoul of left field.

I did sense some musicality, but that was about as far as I could get with the piano's quality. And don't feel bad -- I don't even have a piano! wink

I listened to about 20 seconds of the Etude and then turned it off, I couldn't stand any more. The least you can do is to please stop butchering Chopin's wonderful music.

I think the other posters should be less mean.. reading these comments can be discouraging for people.

At least you're playing all the right notes. But you should listen to some recordings of these pieces and try to play like them. I don't mean emulate it 100%, but you need to hear the difference between how you play and how a master would play. Then try to implement it.

Some specifics... more legato and connection. Make the pedal changes more subtle and connect the phrases together. Play LH softer and make the melody sing more. And you should get a teacher to help you with it if you're serious about getting better.
