I found this temperament sequence by Rick Baldassin, and think it is pretty smart.

I think that what one needs to realise is that a temperament is a means to an end.

Ok, here it goes, backtracking, refining and fudging are all apart of the process too, to obtain an excellent sounding temperament and tuning.

It was Ernest Unrau of CAPT that adapted this and posted it some time ago on the CAPT forum.

Dear Mark,

Interesting! Thank-you for sharing. This is actually quite interesting to me, as it shows a different approach to building the thirds 'ladder' within the octave (F to F4), and allows for compromises and rechecks to build a proper set within the temperament octave. Quite frankly; the temperaments that begin 'Pull a 7-beat F/A third out of mid-air and then do everything else' turn me off rather quickly. The actual speed of the third at F/A3 varies from piano to piano, and simply plucking a beat rate out of mid-air is an awful way to begin a tuning! This temperament sequence neatly identifies how to 'build' that set of thirds. Sweet.

The other bonus in that material is the set of octave checks, and where to use them. This is a very complete and well thought-out set of checks; where to use them, what they mean, and how to apply them. That piano keyboard on the bottom, with the spread of checks and compromise zones, is a very good 'roadmap' of using the checks. Outstanding.

I note from the date that this FAR preceeds his book 'On Pitch', and this handout might very well serve as an advertisement for that slightly more refined work. I do suggest that you find that book, somewhere in internet-land, and add it to your library.

Thanks for the link, Mark!

Sincerely,
Jeffffffff

Hello Jeff

I have been out the whole day tuning, so I only saw your post just now.

Thank you for posting and thank you for the lesson on charging the pin that you wrote about in the other thread.
