I have a good notch cutter, and I have a router table jig to trim the edges, but have not found any other EASY way than with my miter saw to trim the tops of the sticks. The Jig I made for that is pretty simple, a modification of Joe Goss' jig (see mothergoose.com).

But I am looking for a new method that cuts the top of the keystick SQUARE instead of the angle that the miter saw cuts it. I thought I saw one, but the planer bit for the router is no longer produced.

Any ideas? Pictures?

There was a post here a while back showing a jig that used a router. 'Looked intriguing.

I know there are people who like the Wagner Safety Planer. I shied away from it, and I'm not the only one Safety Planer Accident Have you investigated truing up your Miter saw?

I use a jig on my Shopsmith which uses the disk sander to sand the tops flat.

This is how I set up my Wagner planer for reducing key height in preparation for new keytops...

Hope this helps,

One of the most versatile machines I bought is the milling machine.

It works great for precision cutting keys, drilling pin-blocks, making tools and jigs.

I have not done a set for a while - Yvonne Ashmore is so close, the price is competitive with my labor.
I do remember that I did not make the assumption that the bottom of the key-sticks are reliable guides for machining the tops.
The Safety Planer on a drill press is not as nice of a setup as a mill, that is for certain.

I square up the cuts with a chisel.
