Hi, been reading this forum for a while and learning a lot from all of you but this is my first time posting. I was wondering if somebody could help clarify how the left hand mordent in measure 27 of Bach's Prelude in C# minor (BWV 849) is most likely meant to be spelled. A mordent is indicated over the B#, my understanding is that ornamentation is generally understood to be executed diatonically unless otherwise indicated. I'm using the Henle Urtext edition and there doesn't appear to be an indication that the A should be raised, so is this played as a B#-A natural-B# augmented second mordent? It sounds a little more foreign to my ears so I though I should probably check with people who know more about this than I do smile. Thanks!

A#.

I don't know that there's an official rule, but in context, the A-natural would be non-diatonic and the augmented 2nd is a little too spicy for a baroque ornament in a Loure.
