I have a Yamaha P95 and like the overall quality and key action.
But it only has 10 or so voices.
Can I connect a cheap Casio keyboard via the in/out midi conections and use the Casio voices instead to get more variety yet still have proper weighted key action?

Yes, indeed you can!

As James says, yes you can, but be sure to pick a Casio (or whatever) that has standard MIDI inputs (not just USB). Also, you could look into getting more sounds by connecting the P95 to something else you already own... like your computer, or, if you have them, an iPad or iPhone.

Okay thanks
So if I hook up the second keyboard via MIDI and use my piano as the controller, from which one does the audio eventually output?

If i use both in and output cables I hope it would be the P95

Problem with that is, MIDI has nothing to do with audio - it just sends messages between instruments and controllers (computer etc) about which notes to play, not actual sounds.

If you want the P95 the reproduce the voices from elsewhere, you'd have to link the two keyboards via line out (casio) and line in (p95). But I very much doubt the p95 has line inputs. In fact, I'm sure it does not.

You'd be better putting both into an external system of some sort - old hi-fi, reasonable quality ghetto blaster - what ever. Because the sound system on the p95 is pretty low power and has little bass as far as I can remember...

A good quality computer audio monitor set would also be an option - the sort of thing LogiTech make. Of course it should be one of the bigger, higher wattage ones.

As Toddy basically said, MIDI has nothing to do with audio, all the MIDI cable is doing is allowing the P95 to trigger the sounds on the Casio, as if you were playing the Casio itself. The Casio sounds are still coming out of the Casio. The addition of a MIDI Out cable on the Casio back to the Yamaha does nothing for you in this scenario.

Should sound better with these, I'd think, yes.
