after my last few lessons of him just showing me all these different things i need to correct and going in on me so much he actually apologized for all the negative feedback. i told him absolutely don't apologize, if everything was great i wouldn't need you, i appreciate it most definitely! this lesson i nailed most of the homework after i got over the "first time playing piano today" hump. then i showed him a piece i was working on my own and he said for the first time since i started that he was impressed! i was so happy with those small but very meaningful words laugh.

As well, I did some research on keys and scales (for my own future improv desire) and wow, im realizing the more i learn just HOW much i DONT know. I enjoyed learning about how scales are just what a key is made up of, i felt something really click with how music is put together. I asked about learning some scales and he said it won't really help with the music im currently learning, it seems we are learning just chords at the moment, which im okay with. the scales from what i saw are plenty easy to teach myself with no problems.

overall, very progress oriented weed and VERY FUN!!! laugh

Sweet 06- you mention your future goals in improv, are you an avid jazz fan? That reminds me of myself when I first started getting into the theory of things. Practicing your major scales in all keys is a really good start too.

well done, it's always nice to have your hard work well received.

Scales although they would appear to be quite easy are in fact quite tricky. I have heard that some teachers do build up towards them whereas I originally thought it was the first thing to learn. So perhaps he is waiting for the correct time.

The tricky thing about scales is not the fingering, but the technique of how you move your body, arm, hand, and fingers. Using the wrong technique can place enormous roadblocks in the way of achieving fluidity in scales, as well as possibly causing injury. A teacher who understands good scale technique and can teach it is a wonderful resource.

Something to add to my previous post:

When you're just starting out, the fingering and the coordination between the hands can be tricky. But the thing that is much much MUCH harder to figure out without a teacher is the motions that allow things like fluidity, control, good tone, and speed, while avoiding things that can cause injury.

i use hannon to not only do what its designed to do, but also i'll go for a piano run thru, a cresendo run thru, a forte run thru. that way i can practice multiple things in a single exercise.
