Hello guys, I'm EDM producer, and the main problem am facing is the melody compostion/theory. I dont know any music theory, i have no idea of chords, which notes go with each other... I want to be able to make full dynamic song like for example "David Guetta - Titanium", in which there are like 3 different melodies for the intro, break, and drop, but my ear is ready for all of them, they sound good although they are different, but if i try to make my own full song (intro, break, drop) my ear is not ready for the melody change, what do i need to know to be able to create good technically/ear sounding melodies? And how to make different melodies but my ear to be ready for the different melodies?

er, is it this wiki page - Electronic Dance Music EDM ?????

Electronic dance music (also known as EDM, dance music, club music, or simply dance) a coverall term used to describe lowest common denominator synthetic soulless McMuzak. It is as far removed from music as is possible and should be avoided at all cost if you value integrity and honesty in the music you listen to. Of course if you like being force fed corporate GM white noise then it will be ideally for you and I recommend that you continue reading for an equally slanted potted history of something that has nothing to do with Disco, House, Techno or Drum & Bass.

lol dude. i know EDM, I like it. I know a producer/DJ by the name of sean android. He has a music degree and we chat about theory and stuff ever since I got into playing piano. He knows all about keys and how to change keys cleverly and disguised. You are looking for a matrix style plug in to download the knowledge you need in order to execute your job. Unfortunately, nothing like that exists. You will need to spend a considerable amount of time learning the things you stated you don't know. All the things you said you don't know, you need to know in order to do what you want to do. I'd find a different job in the mean time, however.

I was randomly poking at Amazon and thought of this thread when I saw this:

Dance Music Manual

It gets very good reviews from a lot of Amazon readers.

Some hours later, because I'd examined at the book I'd posted above, Amazon suggested that I might be interested in this one:

Music Theory for Computer Musicians

Also gets lots of good reviews.

Obviously Amazon ranks high among my top internet time-sinks. Along with a certain forum I know...

My son writes or creates some really cool EDM on his computer, he doesn't know a lot about theory but he does have a really good ear. I'm not sure how traditional music theory would relate to EDM but maybe learning about chord progressions and modulation would help with what you are trying to accomplish. You might find this site helpful to get you started on theory in general: http://www.musictheory.net

Also, I would say to trust you ear and go with your instincts about what sounds right.Just experiment with it. smile

My son just happened to call as I was typing this. He said usually what he does is he will just write like 10 melodies, 10 drops, and 10 bridges (hope I got all the terminology right). And then he will just experiment putting them together and seeing what sounds good. So, maybe give that a try.
“The doubters said, "Man cannot fly," The doers said, "Maybe, but we'll try,"
And finally soared in the morning glow while non-believers watched from below.”
