Hello Friends,

I have settled on buying an acoustic vertical piano to aid my return to serious classical piano study, with the aim of entering an amateur competition in the next few years. My loves are Bach, Haydn and Mozart with forays into Chopin, Schubert and Satie.

I really like the W. Hoffmann instruments by Bechstein - tone, touch, quality and price seem to come together (my budget is $10k or under).

I'm wondering if anyone has any specific thoughts on the V 112 or V120 models? I live in an apartment and don't need to go larger than this - I have no need for sheer volume but am instead focused on beauty and color of tone along with a very very light action.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

Just keep playing the pianos and see which one may be the most suitable for you!

Hi KlavierLiebhaber, why not try go for a T series? The cost isn't that much higher in the UK anyway (I'm not sure about the US), and they are really wonderful pianos.

That said, the V series sound very good and do very well. I'm not sure how experienced a pianist you are, but over time I would say you'd be more satisfied with the 120cm piano. The 112cm piano may well be beautifully balanced within its range, but the 120 will give you a clearer and more sonorous bass. Not necessarily louder, in the brute force sense, but you'll gain better control over the piano.

I don't think that bigger is ALWAYS better, for instance, I don't often like 130cm pianos (except for the Bechstein 8 and the Bosendorfer 130), but 120 is a good size for an upright.

Hey Thanks Joe,

Indeed, the V 120 has an average MSRP of about a $1,000 more than the V 112, so that might be the way to go. I'm an advanced amateur pianist for certain, so I do want an instrument that inspires me smile

And I'd certainly be open to the T series, though this is all dependent on what the dealer has available. I have been in touch with the Bechstein dealer in Chicago and he advised me to pop in since things are always changing. When you're focused on a particular brand and model, do you think dealers would be open to special ordering a particular instrument just for you, particularly if you paid in cash, which would be my intention?

By the way, do you have a W. Hoffmann at home?
