By furniture value only, nice look to pay.

Pay any cent more only if EVERY key is spending a nice sweet tone and is damped correctly. Reason: It is nearly impossible to get spare parts for square pianos.

Offering prices vary extremely. Some months ago a square grand Steinway turned three or four times on ebay for 800 USD (finger lake regin, New York state) and was not sold, some other think that old Steinway squares would give money in the equivalent of platinum weight metal...

There is a (probably very small) set of people who are interested in pianos like this for their historical / antique furniture aspect. Some might play them a bit. They do not have the historical significance of a piano-forte from Mozart's era, btw.

Outside of that group, they have no/very little monetary value as a musical instrument.

If you are selling one, you need to find someone from that small group interested (could take a very long time), and I would expect the price to be less than 1,000.

Ugh ! Square Grands are my Nemesis ! I get about 3 or 20 a year LOL. It's always the same thing with them. " You know these are worth 38K restored" they say and there we are lugging the boat anchor to the warehouse... again.

Some quick facts... They don't sound very good even when they work. They will sell faster in New England rather than any other place in the universe. Tuners don't like them and will want to hide behind a armored car when tuning them due to strings that may break.

They are nice to look at, some are fancy but if they don't work it's a heavy desk and that is about it. Occasionally if I want a challenge we will convert them to digital for someone.

You have to find the older ones as in Pre 1800 to warrant interest when it comes to squares

How to value:

You take a number that you first thought of
Then subtract that number from it
Then deduct the cost of removing the piano and disposing of it (in, say, a skip)
Also deduct a sum for however you value your time in finding a value and finding a skip

The answer is your value

PS: sorry to be so blunt to a first time poster. No one wants square pianos. This is not good news for you but it is a fact. Try punting it out on eBay with no reserve. You might get someone attracted by the Steinway label if you are lucky, who will cart it away for you. This assumes you are a seller. If you are a buyer: don't.

I thank you all for replies. Sheesh! If it's a dead horse why does everyone want to kick it?
Reading up on them, there does seem to be quite a bit of condemning apples for not being oranges. They were simply a part of the evolution of the piano, and as pointed out, they were likely what most of the Mozart-era famous European composers were familiar with and wrote for. I heard one played once, and it was a gentler, less aggressive sound, not bright but sweet.More a chamber than a concert instrument.
Anyway, it's moot if no one will give two cents for them because they have the reputation of an Edsel.

Just as an example I put a lot of 14 square grands including 3 steinways on ebay two years ago with a starting bid of 99 cents. The auction went for 7 days and by the end I had 12 bids which equaled 29.00.

The high bidder then emailed to ask for one of the lacework type music racks and I still have the rest. I have pallet racking in my warehouse and they actually look good 20 feet off the floor. Makes for good conversation with potential customers. Some people have books or trinkets on their shelves, I have 1000 pound pianos.
