If you could have any composer/pianist (alive or dead) give you a private two hour recital, who would you pick and what would you like them to play?

My choice would be Chopin, with the instruction to play anything he wanted. blush

Lets hear it.

Chopin, playing his own compositions.

My second choice might be Beethoven playing his late sonatas.

Is that composer or pianist?

If so then I'd pick Ricardo Vines, and I'd have play Ravel and Debussy, and probably some Chopin.

Otherwise I'd pick Debussy.

I'd like to hear Liszt play Beethoven.

Or Chopin play Mozart.

Busoni playing Bach, late Beethoven, any Liszt, any Alkan.

Rachmaninov playing any damn thing he fancies.

Argerich playing Liszt's Mephisto Waltz or Schumann's Toccata. (Both these works were in her repertory.)

Franck playing his organ works.

I'd go for Clara Schumann playing music of her choice.

Top marks Barbara ... all the earlier snooty-nosed
peasants hammer away at the same old bunch of classical deadbeats ... with never a thought of vying from their
straight-laced antiquities.

I would back Gershwin to top the list anytime ... have got a recording of Grappelli playing the Gershwin hits at this very moment ... who can't be totally enthralled by
the smash hit "Summertime"?

And to think that George tragically died very young (38)of a brain tumour ... what a loss!!

Thanls, btb.

The definition of 'Composer" is not endemic to the Classical period genre only.

I'd say Rachmaninoff, but we already have quite a few recordings from him...

Instead, I'll go for Beethoven playing Beethoven.

Beethoven playing the Waldstein or just improvising. More importantly, seeing all those composers and pianists roll all their chords smile

Young Beethoven playing his Op 2/3 or Op 13! (We might not be ready for it. blush )

I would love to get on a time machine and attend the party where Horowitz and Rachmaninoff performed Suite No. 2 for Two Pianos. Apparently this took place in Los Angeles, and I bet they had a decent wine selection for the guests.

Need you ask?
Once we get past The Obvious, preferably improvising, I'd like to hear Liszt (of course!) and John Field as the young Chopin's playing was twice compared to his in a complimentary fashion. Might as well check out the competition as well with Thalberg.

Tough call between Chopin and Liszt...while the latter would be more impressive, his personality from all accounts was probably better suited to a large-scale recital with a huge audience, not a private recital.

What an honour to be able to hear either though!

I would love to see Dave Brubeck again, because he told me I should listen to some of his sacred music, and I got the chance to hear it just a few months after I last saw him.

I'd give anything to have Horowitz walk me through the Tchaikovsky piano concerto (for the octaves), or Rachmaninoff to show me how to play his prelude op.23 no.9 in e-flat minor. What was he thinking when he composed that? It's unplayable!
