My mother in law recently passed away and left a piano. We have been trying to determine the age and value of the piano because it is tied up in the estate. It was the piano my wife learned to play on and we would like to buy it from the estate.

We found the original receipt which reads...Baldwin Grand Piano #53467 it also has s3170, I found a stamped C in the back left corner but could not find a stamped serial number on the outside or under the piano.

The Piano is smaller than a Grand, it is 6'1" long and about 4'9" wide. The piano has been ignored for the last 10-12 years but previous to that it was regularly tuned.

We are looking for an acquisition cost and not a retail cost. The piano needs some work but not major work.

I hope someone can help. When we tell piano guys out here that we don't want to sell, they run from us.

If that is the serial number, it was made in 1927. Your best bet is to call a piano technician to evaluate it, because the value will depend on condition and your local market.

Just as a rough estimate, it could be worth $1000 to $5000. That is a wide range because the condition of an old piano can vary so much.

Good advice, BDB...
