This one is superb as well!

I have thoughts on the notation also . . . maybe as with bars 1 - 16, beat one of the l.h. as a downstem dotted half note in a separate voice with a quarter note rest above it?

I do not play it that way, but you are very welcome to do what you want. In fact, I play this piece with a very staccato touch.. something I didn't even notate at all because I want the player to have freedom.

Very nice, Joel! I read through it earlier, just to get a feel for it. Fun, indeed.

I found myself placing the staccato on beat 2 of mm1 and sometimes on beat 1 of mm2 (as that pattern repeats). I played around with it, though, so I'm pretty sure the "dot" went all over the place. lol grin

Most mazurkas need staccatos on beat two or they sound bland!

As you know I will be recording music by living composers and anyone here who is interested, and it is desired to include your music. There is more than one obligation in this regard but there will be time for all.

(I have been lazy about emails and need to correct this but please know whoever reads this, if your music was sent, it is on the list!)

There are of course growing anxieties about this endeavor. More than ten years ago I was going to record some music for a composer - he had no performing musicians supporting him and I could have contributed - however the mp3 I sent him was so different in musical conception from the original in terms of tempo, dynamics and dynamic range, use of the pedals, added notes, rolled chords and other asynchronous displacement of voices, that he emailed back saying for me to destroy all copies of his music which had been sent and to never contact him again!

(this is deeply disappointing to this day, one of his compositions in particular is without any doubt whatsoever a great masterpiece of music, as much as is anything in the standard piano repertoire . . . his particular musical genius is what moved me in part to reach out to him)

Are you sure you really are okay with this, that you really can "let go" of the music and let it have a life in the world separate from your own?

p.s. - do you have a preference with the scales in double thirds in the Miniature No. 2 more as leggiero or more as legato? I have been with that composition today in addition to some by other composers smile

p.p.s. - I never destroyed my copies of the scores he sent!

Take it public, please. Perform my works -- do you know how happy that would make me?? Haha

As long as you don't go radical like late Pogorelich, I'm fine with what you do. Try to stay to the score but don't be shy with your own musical ideas - I encourage them.

About those thirds, I would say it's near impossible to play those all with perfect legato. Just try to get them as legato sounding as possible, use a little pedal if you need to. All of my works should have 'Ped. ad libitum' and if they don't, it's because that's before I knew that term existed.
