My daughter is learning to play the piano, but she often has a problem with her excercises, that she doesn't know how to place and shift the position of her hands.

A solution to this this could be an IPAD app which displayed the sheets + plus gave a visual assitance to how the hands should be placed on the piano.

Does anyone know of such an app?

I have seen a lot of apps, but most of them is to my knowlegde of no good in actually leaning to read sheets.

Does she have a teacher? If so, does her teacher know that she has this problem? Her teacher should teach her what to do to learn to do this. Reliance on software is not the answer, anymore than put springs on gym shoes will help a gymnast learn to jump. Knowing how to place your hands and where to shift involves a set of knowledge, and a strategy or approach that is taught.

Welcome Kjeld! smile

Can you tell us more about her playing? Most students have difficulties if they have played for a long time in a 5-finger position and then suddenly they need to put their hands in a different place. It could be she hasn't really truly learned the notes, but is playing by finger number.

Giving her 'assistance' may just make it worse by allowing her to continue without really working it out for herself.

Welcome to the forum Kjeld! I agree with the above posters, but I think more information is needed. As far as I know, there is no app that helps with this. However, a good teacher has ways of helping a student shift hand positions.

Each student is individual in the ways they learn, perceive, understand, feel, respond, etc. When someone on an app or youtube video gives instructions, they can't cover all those ways to make sure what whoever is listening can get it. But in person, a teacher can observe the specific issue the student is having, give instruction geared toward that exact problem and toward the individual's learning style, then observe the student's response to that and go from there to clarify and adjust as needed. This is how true learning happens and is much more efficient (and less frustrating) than the student having to adjust their learning style and understanding to fit whatever style the teacher or app presents the information.

It depends on what you mean...Home Concert Xtreme will take a MIDI file and show both the score and where the notes are on a keyboard.

But if you're asking if there's an app that can take a piece of sheet music (like a pdf or picture) and show you how to play it, then no, that's an impossible feat for current technology.
