I realize this may be another topic that has widely varying approaches from different technicians. But I'm working on standardizing my maintenance policies for Dampp-chaser systems. In the past I have replace pads and liners free of charge when part of a regular tuning appointment. Recently, on several pianos I have found the need to charge for a "maintenance" or "cleaning" service on pianos where the system has been neglected for some time. Do you charge for routine pad-changing? New bottles of solution? Do you give discounts if you installed the system yourself and it has been maintained?

I don’t offer discounts for neglected anything. For long time clients who regularly service their instruments and accessories, I offer pads and solution, but not cleaning the entire system, if required.

Charge for pads and solution; and I think it is best to replace neglected systems.

Continuous operation is essential, so in most situations, the owner has to maintain the system.

These systems will last for a long time and I charge for routine service on them and also for pads and solution to cover my costs. With the plastic tank liners and plastic protective sheath on the evaporation rod, there really isn't a lot to do with these any more where the costs/time amounts to very much, but just the same, I don't operate as a charity, and much like Dan, I don't reward negligence (on a matter of principle).
