THE THIRD CHICAGO AMATEUR PIANO COMPETITION

MAY 21-25, 2014

More information will be posted soon.

Qualifications

Applicants must be amateurs: the word amateur stems from the Latin amo, meaning “to love.” From this the PianoForte Foundation has created the following definition of an amateur pianist: an enthusiastic pursuer of piano playing for pleasure and dedication to the instrument and its repertoire, rather than professional pursuits or financial benefit.

Applicant must be 30 years or older by May 21, 2014.

Applicants must not be faculty members at a college/conservatory level music department.

Applicants must not derive a majority of their income from public performances.

Applicants must not be actively pursuing a degree in piano performance.

Previous first place winners are not eligible to compete.

Format

CAPC 2014 will consist of two competitions: solo piano and concerto, although competitors have the option to participate in both simultaneously. The solo piano competition will accept up to 60 competitors, and the concerto competition will accept up to 20. Six finalists in in the concerto competition will perform live with the Chicago Youth Symphony at one of Chicago's most significant venues.

Repertoire

Solo Piano

Competitors are free to choose their own programs for all solo piano rounds of the competition. No works may be repeated in subsequent rounds. Repertoire should reflect a variety of musical styles, periods, and composers. Individual movements of larger works are acceptable. Works do not have to be memorized. The contestant may choose to play one or more pieces during each round.

Concerto

Contestants will choose one of the following selections, equaling 15-20 minutes of music. An accompanist will be provided for Round 1.

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58 I. Allegro Moderato

Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21 I. Maestoso

Rachmaninoff: Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 I. Allegro ma non tanto

Housing

Applicants are free to find their own lodging while in Chicago. Housing options will be included in the Welcome Package sent to all accepted applicants.

Affordable, apartment-style dorms at University Center may be available--please check back for updates.

APPLICATION

Applications will be available soon

I'll be applying this time! Would be nice to know about other PW members planning to go there.

Great opportunity to practice a concerto, but...

So for me the choice will be between Beethoven 4 and Chopin 2. Completely different types of concertos, Beethoven 4 being much more difficult in terms of soloist-orchestra dialogue I guess. Well, I love both of them. This could be fun....
