Hi everyone, first post, love this forum. Can anyone help me identify this music that is playing in this video. I'd really like to try playing some of it but would need sheets as I can't play by ear. Thanks.

Ask the person who posted the video on YouTube?

Honestly, it's hard to listen to that... hurts my ear. frown

Welcome to the forum, Ashley! smile

I didn't recognize the music, and I tried SoundHound on it, and it didn't come up with anything, either. Sounded like a jazzy improv to me. Sorry!

p.s. I'm like you and can't play anything by ear, and it's so frustrating to find a piece you really like but can't find the sheet music for!

Never heard it and if that is the first and last time that is fine with me.

Thanks Monica,

I did ask the person who put the video up on youtube but so far no response. I'm also thinking its some kind of improv. I know its a little rough around the edges but I love the way it sounds, I would like to here it on my old upright. Music is such a personal and subjective experience. I know tastes differ a lot, I'm also learning that a lot of piano people are quite "complicated".

I would say it's improvised also and I'd add you could probably play as good a version in a month. Can your ears separate what he's playing with his right hand and playing with his LH? It'd probably sound a wee bit better and less chaotic if he'd slow it down.

Yep, may have something to do with 88 rather than 10 white and black buttons to chose from. whome

I can tell the left from the right hand and pick out some notes here and there as well as some bits of some chords. I been playing for five months now after not playing since I was a teen (35 years ago!). I'm hearing way better than I was, I hold out that eventually I may be able to deconstruct something like that by ear. I just need some fun stuff to practice learning, I'm also realizing I probably need to relearn all the chords and practice arpeggios and stuff, not that fun. Thanks

Music in it's most simplistic form can really be the most beautiful....but I have to agree the more you know the more complicated it is and in some ways the more 'complicated' ideas your ear wishes you to hear.

I'd be happy to help you figure it out if it is something you hope to play.

Well, ignoring the key change he put in there late in the tune (and I'm assuming the guy working on the piano is also who played this), are you comfortable playing in his key choice? If not, start in a key you are comfortable with ... I'm pathetic in his key I might add. grin

But, ask yourself what are the I, IV and V chords in the key of say Bb as a starting point.

There's very little melody to work with here so listen and get a general idea of what he's doing with the RH and just play block chords with the left hand that your ears tell you work with that melody. Soon your ears may hear better chord changes and melody in a few places than what he may be choosing plus you will begin to investigate some broken chord options.

Book it, like Rada said, if you simplify it and slow it down, it will sound better than what he's done and with less errors with time.

Btw, I'm pretty much like you, if it ain't fun, I'll find another way to play a piano that is fun. grin

Thanks for the advise on how to develop a good ear, I'm going to keep working on it. Maybe someday I'll be able to play a badly timed and chaotic improv like this one, lol. I still like the way it sounds though. The piano sounds a bit like my new to me 1922 Williams upright. Rough. Perfect little piece for it.
