Oooh nice thread! Get ready for a full gallery smile

Here is Lucia, my tiny grumpy Persian cat, who unfortunately is no longer with me:

This is my Exotic cat Violetta, the little bear):

This is Francis, a Scottish Fold, enjoying the sun:

And here is our latest acquisition, the ginger cat who came to live in our courtyard!

So cute everyone! I lost my Panda last May. I still miss him loads, and while we will probably be getting another kitten (or two), there will never be any replacing of him.

In the meantime, this lil guy (or gal) has been visiting us:

Tubbie, that video made me want to smell that puppy smell!

I love your babies past and present, Diana smile

Erin- I always think its a tribute to departed pets when you adopt (and save) another pet..

Mr Sqaure - Ginger is precious, and nice goldtop!

Jeanie, I've always thought that picture was awesome.

Here's mine - Dinah is 17.5 years old. She is the center of the universe in this house.

This thread was bitter sweet for me. Two days ago my cat, Polycarp, named after Saint Polycarp, jumped oddly off the box he was sleeping on and died when he hit the floor. It brought back memories of me playing Alfred's (terribly most likely)and him standing up from the floor, front paws perched on the piano bench, demanding I stop to play with him. Sadly, I have no pictures. I can't afford a digital camera, but his mother was a smoked Persian and he had her pushed back nose but was solid black. He was only about nine years old.

I'm so sorry for your loss. What a great name, too. I bet he was a great companion. Cats always think they are invincible, and we believe them, too. Was he a music lover?

How sad Bill. We lost two cats last year, one had kidney disease and the other one fell from the balcony (I know, safety net etc.). They were 11 and 7. It tears one to pieces, and even if you do your best you always feel like you could have done a little bit more.

So sad! My Panda died from kidney disease as well, but he fought and lived much longer than the vets said he would. He let us know when he was done fighting, and that was the hardest decision we ever had to make. But we know it was right, but still it's easy to second-guess as you look back.

I think the key is to know how much you loved them, and they knew it. If you spent every waking moment with them they would have not liked that, as cats love to be free and need their space too. It's not just how much you loved them, but how much they loved you, too. No regrets. smile

Lately Lucy's kidneys were so big you could feel them with your hand. A genetic problem. I'm just glad that she had the chance to spend several summers free in the country, like an outdoor cat. She was never completely happy in the apartment. I so wished she would hold on a few more months, and leave us in the fall, not at the end of spring.

She was the tiniest Persian I'd ever seen, not even 2 kg. I had chosen her among her siblings for the fierce look...

Oh, and I planted a white rose in my field where she is buried. I can easily say that I have never suffered so much as when she died. (I know, I've been lucky so far).

Here's Roger.

He was trying to live, and making a bad job of it, under the bush in front of our house. That was five years ago. He is the sweetest animal I have ever known. There is one thing he will not do, which is to go anywhere near the front door when it is open. "Been out there, done that, never again" is the general attitude.

That "thing" is no more! Really didn't last long up against Bull Terrier teeth! He loved pushing along the doggie trails we had shoveled in the snow!

Believe it or not, Bugsy will fetch. I need something to trade with him in order for him to drop what he has fetched. He doesn't give up what he has gotten easily! But, we'll play the "two sticks" game. I throw one, he goes and gets it. He has to drop it for me to throw the other. The game can get kind of crazy as it revs him up big time!!

I love Bugsy and his giant ball!

I had a dober(wo)man who would go into a frenzy of outrage because she couldn't get her mouth around a basketball. She would lunge at it over and over, mouth wide open, and yowling the most ungodly shrieks of frustration and rage.

A similar issue arises when giving a guinea pig a cherry tomato, or a plump enough grape.

Dear BTB

I spoke with my cat Roger as to what South African cats might be doing to make you dislike them so.

He advised that, while cyber communication in the animal world is suspended right now due to sunspots. he is aware that South African cats can be quite likable, or at least become tolerable, when offered small treats. However do not approach too closely at first.

Well, we did it. Yesterday, we met these two lovely brothers at a no-kill shelter and decided to adopt them.

They have quite a back story. They were originally at this shelter as kittens, the last two of the same litter. The black one was the only medium hair of the black kittens, and there were several siamese in the mix. These two were adopted by a woman who was 41 and had a son who was 11. The woman's health was bad though, and she died at 45. I'm not quite sure of the details, but apparently the now 15 year old son was trying to care for them but couldn't, and then the neighbors were passing the buck between them. Eventually the cats were taken to the county animal shelter. They got an upper respiratory infection and were set to be euthanized (what they call "going to Room 189"), when a worker decided to scan them to see if they had microchips in them. Sure enough, the no-kill shelter had installed microchips when they were kittens, so the cats were whisked off back to the shelter at the 11th hour.

I'm not sure how long they've been there, but they decided that the two brothers must stay together - they've been through too much turmoil to be separated. We were looking for two cats, preferably littler mates so they would get along with each other, but not quite sure of the prospect of dealing with kittens. They were purrfect for us! smile

We decided to give them names of food. Here is Shoga, which means ginger root in Japanese:

And here is Futomaki which means fat roll (as in sushi). We call him Futo for short:

Futo has been very out and about our bedroom, where we have them secluded for now until they get used to us, while Shoga is happier being under the bed. We coax him out every now and then and he loves the attention, so I think it won't be long before he feels secure enough to be let loose in the house. We shall see what they think of my piano playing and singing! laugh

Morodiene, they are wonderful! They look like they will be a lot of trouble wink

Odin and Achilles are also very beautiful, with their white socks. It's great to see the interactions between two or more cats. I think they are happier that way, even if they quarrel sometimes.

Haha. My cats rarely fight. Odin gets a little irritated when he's losing a wrestling match, but other than that they get along perfectly.

And yes, they are certainly the Gods of the household...everything in my apartment exists to please them.

Great stories.

Good for you Morodiene for taking on the brothers. They are gorgeous.

I'm in Manhattan this week on holidays, and my friends have adopted a no-name kitten. I accompanied the new kitten's dad to pick it up from its new mom's Madison Ave. office. A colleague of hers had taken the little thing in temporarily. It's just so charming to watch everyone's hearts warmed by this little creature and their efforts to make it comfortable. It wasn't too thrilled by the subway ride downtown, but is now safe in its new home. Ready for a lifetime of ruling!

Cute fluffy pets. Alas I cannot have any because 1- I am out too much, 2- I am not allowed any in my tenancy agreement, 3- I am allergic to cats and dogs ( but a dog would be my dream pet). However I will have to be content with the worms in my Wormery! And the wild birds in my garden who I feed.

You are like a detective. The pumpkin dog (Emma) is jealous of Super dog's (Charlie) new outfit and nipping at him ( just a quick nip to remind him of his station in life). I scolded her and she went into hiding.

Hiya FarmGirl,
Jez tries to go into hiding if I try to put clothes of any sort on her. She will barely tolerate a snappy t-shirt and it's like "gunfight at the OK corral" with costumes or a raincoat. Anything with a hood or hat, ears, etc, well, she just falls over on her side and refuses to move. It's so odd, as if she regards it as punishment or something. BTW your dogs are very stylish. grin

Lovely pictures, everyone. smile I have a new baby, a young rescue cat from a local shelter that had a fire recently. She's polydactyl, a "Hemingway cat".

Elssa, has your new cat shown any aptitude for piano? As a polydactyl, she might be naturally talented.

Yes, being a polydactyl, she's especially good at playing the polychords. grin wink

Good one, Elssa! Congrats on your new baby! Our cat Becky is also a rescue cat we got from a shelter. Her full name is Becky-Boo, but mostly it's Becky when she's sweet and Boo when she's bad. This picture doesn't do her justice but it's the only one I have on my computer.

Thanks. She's very vocal, too. I swear she tried to imitate me doing my vocal exercises one day. If I could have gotten it on tape, it would have been the cat video to end all cat videos. smile

When I moved to Switzerland I had to leave my Dobergirl with my Mom. I miss her terribly, but it worked out well, because she is a great companion for my Mom, and gets Mom out walking several times a day. I am heading to the states to spend Thanksgiving through Christmas with my Mom, and I am looking forward to seeing them both! Here is a picture of "Vanessa" hunting frogs on the pond in Missouri, and a picture with her brother, KJ, on our property in Oregon. He crossed the Rainbow Bridge a few months before we moved to Switzerland. I still miss him! They were both water dogs.

Vocal exercises in Switzerland sounds interesting ...

Do they still rush up the grassy slope of the nearest snow-clad mountain
and let the locals share their pent-up frustrations with an
echo-rendition of the “The Sound of Music”?.

Time for me to head for the hills ... or at least take my two dogs
(Labrador and sheep-dog) ... for “walkies” and a good old pavement sniff .

Regards, btb

No, but there are yodeling contests here. They also play a local instrument called an Alphorn, that is very mournful and melodic. Often in the evening there is a group of Aplhornists practicing on the waterfront in front of our apartment.

Your dogs are lovely, Doris. It's wonderful you are able to make this sacrifice for your mom's health and well being, and it will also serve you, having her healthy so you can make the most of your time left together.

I dreamed about my mom last night. I was trying to get to her out in the country for some celebratory occasion, but the train track stopped and I couldn't reach her. Then she called me and I tried to tell her but realized I might still make it going in the opposite direction. Then we were together and there was a beautiful angelic looking woman helping us get ready. She had done Mom's hair in a very beautiful Grecian style that suited her beauty. She was young and beautiful in the dream.

I woke up glad but then remembered she was no longer around to call which made me teary and I cried a little.

Make the most of your moments with her this holiday. I also lived far away from my mother and wished I'd seen her more.

That it is wonderful dream about your Mother! I am making a point of spending special time with my Mother at this point of her life. She is 84, and in good health, but I certainly do not want to take her for granted. I am looking forward to spending the holiday season with her and making music together!

Thanks smile Many who study dreams and some psychics say that when you talk to someone deceased on the phone in a dream, they are really communicating with you, and I heard her voice so clearly. This is second dream I had like that. The first one was right after I spoke at her memorial. In it she called me to thank me for the gifts I gave her. I asked when she opened them and she said "while you were speaking".

Elssa, I'm glad your mom is doing well. SwissMs I wish you a wonderful holiday with your mom.

My mom was 84 when she died early this year. You are both lucky to still have them with you during the holidays.
