Does anyone know of piano competitions that don't emphasize Classical music, allow original compositions, and don't have age limits? I'm a semi-professional musician and composer, 32 years old. I want to hit the competition circuit to gain exposure (specifically for my original music), but all the competitions I find focus on Classical repertoire or exclude someone of my age. I appreciate any information people can share.

What do you mean by "non-classical"?

Yeah... "non-classical" is not particularly descriptive so it is difficult to be helpful.

Generally speaking though I'm not sure if you're going to achieve your aims going this route. Classical music has sort of niche market and the competitions have been around for a long time it seems. The only parallel I can really see in the non-classical world are widely televised talent shows. But these, to put it bluntly, are awful and are for entertainers, not for artistic types. If you're a composer I'm not sure what route would be best for you, other than perhaps obvious stuff like networking. There are non-classical discussion boards online for songwriters and composers. Perhaps this is more up your alley? I've seen a lot of diverse material posted on some of these boards.

This might seem unrelated but a lot of rising progressive metal bands (specifically in the subgenre of "djent") have skyrocketed in popularity due in part to maintaining a presence in online forums. Animals as Leaders, Periphery, and TesseracT all had members who frequented discussion boards online where they shared their musical ideas. They put most (if not all) of their album material on YouTube for free as well and I have seen videos where Tosin Abasi basically gives his audience the "ok" to pirate his music. Not to mention the proliferation of band camp pages, where loads of indie artists from various genres upload entire albums which you can listen to online for free (you also have the option of buying a download of the album, usually for $10 or less).

If you value the music that much you should copyright it. After it is registered maybe you can post a score to one of the works with a recording at the Composer's Lounge?

Making as much as possible digitally available for free seems to be the best route. If people like it then there will be demand for things, such as live performances or nicely bound scores, which might need to have a fee.

Its somewhat of a niche that may or may not conform to your composition style, but the World Old-Time Piano Playing Competition and Festival does have a "New Rag Contest" composition component. The contest/festival is held annually in Peoria, IL over the Memorial Day weekend and, in addition to the 3 contests, it features after-hours open piano playing with little to no stylistic restraints. New Rag Contest rules are here:
