Does anyone know anything about them? My local CL has an ad for a free piano, the fall board says Shaw Piano Co. Baltimore. I can't find much about this company.

Shaw was a brand name used by Steiff. Steiff was a well-built and well respected piano in its day, however that was long ago.

The company never really came back from its takeover by the government at WWII.

Most Shaws and Steiffs I see are to far gone to recondition, and all but the bigger grands aren't worth rebuilding.

The one being given away of CL is probably not worth hauling, unless you are looking for a long-term hobby as opposed to a functioning musical instrument.

Is this the one listed in Lake Forest?

From the photos, it looks pretty clean. If you'd like to have it checked out, please PM me. I'd be happy to help you.

Well, I'm actually considering it for a project. I just got a 6'2" Mason & Hamlin early this summer that sounds fantastic. So good, I can no longer stand the sound of my DP any more. My DP sounds great through cans, but I hate wearing them. I'm looking for an old upright with a good sound board. I plan to pull the action and plate, install the DP's keyboard in the acoustic's cabinet, then drive the soundboard with an amplifier and one or two TST329 Gold Transducers from Clark Synthesis, purely as an academic exercise. This looks like maybe a good candidate.

It is, as a matter of fact. I appreciate the offer, but it's only about five miles from me.

You're welcome.

I wouldn't be surprised if that one ends up being a good score. I'm anxious to hear about the outcome.

Kinda wild that they even have a key cover on it...
