Hi, champy -- I remember posting on your 51 - 2 some time ago. I especially liked your rendition of 51 - 3 -- this is just loaded with charm, warmth, and good humor; in its guileless way, I regard this as one of Medtner's finest Skazki.
The Opus 20 - 1 was also very well paced. with excellent handling of the various dynamic contrasts.
Just out of curiosity, did you use Medtner's own recordings as a model for your own approach? I've always found Medtner's playing of his Skazki especially satisfying from an emotional standpoint, and really the most definitive overall.
Thanks for you comments
I actually listen to his recording a lot. Not just only recording for these particular pieces about other of his stuff too. Most of them were recorded by the time was sick and about to die, according to my thesis research... He wrote many articles about music as a developing art-form and piano playing too... Those articles are brilliant!!! Personally, aside from Brahms, he is a composer that I really feel connected... (in fact, a lot of people at his time said, he was russian Brahms, which he took that as an insult!.. He, on the other hands, like to say instead that, his music and Brahms's are like brothers. But they ain't the same!)
Back to the topic... YES, I listen to a lot of Medtner's recording. But I really did't them as a model, in such a way, that I wanted to "clone" (or should I say "re-mastered" as his recording is fully of "noise" due to the old technology of recording) any particular recording of his. Somewhere in his article, he mentioned also that he never played any of his composition EXACTLY THE SAME twice, as he believed that there is also an 'improvisational' aspect of the story telling... Which I believed it exist in a lot of music (not only his but other's too. Chopin or Schumann for example ...)
So in my case, I used his concept of having an improvisational story-telling in my playing and trying to make the story MINE... but I didn't copy HIS... If u know what I mean...
Gosh.... Some of this stuff is really hard to explain verbally... But it doesn't mean, I do not enjoy discussion on these topic..
