How long are the keys? The action appears a little different to a traditional upright.

I haven't measured it, looks shorter than a grand. The action looks quite similar to Yamaha U1 to me, just no damper.

Wow! That is the funkiest "real piano action" I've ever seen. Though I suppose I'm more used to seeing grand actions.

Just wondering if you saw the sequence for opening it up? I assume you start with the top lid and screws at the back?

Also did he attach anything to run it in debug mode or was it done via some secret combination of the panel and keys?

First remove 3 screws at the back and then remove the top board.
Then disconnect the tweeters and remove 2 screws to remove the front board.
Then remove 2 screws for the key cover.

Why it seems funky? Looks pretty normal for an upright action to me, almost like the one in textbook for this potion of the action.

You're right, I haven't seen many modern upright actions. They look kind of spartan / utilitarian compared to modern grand actions.

That's true. It is all about cost, especially for digital, there is no need for fancy mechanism and material. Comparing with U1, it has less wood and more plastic

Surprisingly short key lengths though. I would imagine the difference in feel from the front of the key to the back of the key would be substantial. Not ideal. My Yamaha U3 has a much larger distance to the pivot than the NU1.

Could we have two individuals measure the respective distances from the front lip of the key to the pivot point?

From the series better late than never... I opened my NU-1 and made these measurements. Ando is right that the keysticks/fulcrum are shorter than in other pianos.
I did not remove the bar from the top of the keys (like in the picture 05, unlike picture 01) so my measurements are a bit approximate, but I took care to be as accurate as possible in the measurement.

So here are the numbers:

The keysticks length is 18.5cm from the tip of the key to capstan pivot point for the white keys. The number for the black keys is 14cm (from the end of the "flat" part of the key, not from the very tip)

By comparison, the same numbers for my 100 year old grand (Apollo) are 24.5cm and 21cm respectively. Note that in the latter the "playable" part of the keys is (annoyingly) shorter: 14cm for whites and 8.5cm for blacks, whereas the NU-1 has them at a more comfortable 15cm for whites and 9cm for blacks.

My notes for the sizes of a Howard upright which I don't own anymore are 22cm and 18.5cm, so the NU-1 has shorter keysticks compared to this upright too. My notes do not say how long the "playable" part of the keys were on the Howard.

Surprisingly, the difference in feel from the front of the key to the back of the key on the NU-1 is not bad at all, and in fact it's very similar to the difference I feel on my grand. Probably the fact that the NU-1 has a definitely heavier action than the grand plays a role.
