I'm wondering, which of the violin concertos out there has a good piano reduction? In the sense that, you know, some orchestral parts would have too much color to be reduced to a piano part.

I'm curious because I'm wondering if it's a good idea to have a violin concerto in a violin/piano recital. Of course we have lots of violin sonata candidates.

Beethoven, Brahms, and Bruch all work pretty well, and I've done Sibelius too

If you're having a collaborative, duo recital, I'd stay away from concertos. There are so many sonatas............

Btw, I wouldn't say the Beethoven works well at all - purely due to the second movement. Sounds like crap on piano. Kind of the same with 2nd movement of Brahms..

That's the spirit! But I've heard that's blasphemy from some people around here. Punishable by five contrary motion scales over three octaves, four Bach inventions and ten piano lid push ups...

Oh you have to! But there's nothing you can do about the fact that we can't shape a sustained note...

That's not true. A skilled pianist can give the illusion of this.

Ugh, that's not what I'm talking about. Can you really imitate an oboe in the second mvt of the Brahms? No. Vibrato, the shape of the long sustained notes.. It's just impossible. Worse even in the second mvt of the Beethoven.

Oddly enough today I was reading about how John Cage threw all sorts of things into the piano to create an orchestral effect. Very interesting although I didn't get a chance to look into it much.

He didn't create an orchestral effect, he just created cacophony.

Can you expand on what you mean by cacophony?

Give it a listen, something tells me you'll love it.

Whatever the something was, it needs to be put in a mental institution.

Perhaps it just comes across like that over the internet then.
