I am put in charge for creating programs for fundraising concert series in my church. By program, I mean the paper program that describes the pieces to be performed and provides performer bios. Since we have a brand new Kawai concert grand, most of the performances focuses or involves piano. Do you use photo shop or is there any special software?

I may make work harder for me that it needs to be, but I make my programs using Microsoft Word. I tried using the "booklet" template in Word, but found that it did not print properly, leaving half-pages blank, although the half pages contained text on screen.

For programs with detailed program notes, I use 8-1/2" x 11" 32lb. stock for the outside cover and I use 8-1/2" x 11" 20lb. sheets for the insert.

For some programs that do not have program notes, I use one 8-1/2" x 11" sheet, 24lb, printed on two sides in two columns each side in landscape format which, when folded makes a four-page program; the one side contains the front and back cover, the other side (inside, when folded) contains the program listing.

My programs are printed on both sides, in two columns, in landscape format, so that when folded in half they make a nice booklet 5-1/2" x 8-1/2". If images are desired, I usually import them from whatever source I find them and then size them to fit the program notes section or use them to illustrate the front cover. I also use the "snip" tool in Word 2010 to cut musical themes and motifs from ISMLP, size them and insert them into the program notes in appropriate places.

Regards,

Thank you Bruce for the detailed information. I will try to do the same.

Same here... I use open office (word like but freeware). And I'm good at it!

HOWEVER,

The main software used for creating such things is Corel Draw (commercial software) and its freeware counterparts, like Inkscape...

It's rather more complicated, but the main thing is that it handles vector images, for professional printing (which you probably don't need and I'm bubbling away), and great handling of that.

The main software used by publishing professionals would be Adobe InDesign.

Adobe Illustrator (and to a much lesser extent, Corel Draw) are used to create vector drawings.

MS Word with the right templates can produce acceptable results.
