Hi,
I was wondering if someone could direct me to a thread, or resource, which would explain, from a tech's point of view, the different pros and cons throughout the history of Steinway grands. I have searched the threads, and found many useful things, such as "in this decade there was no standard for plate height" or, "The steinways in this era had the most control IMO", but I was wondering if anyone had laid it all out decade by decade, the good and the bad.

I would never ask someone to go to the trouble to do this now, but I know some here like to be very descriptive, so feel free if you're up to it!

Thanks in advance, this is a fascinating topic to me, how one famous maker can go through so many different stages of piano making.

Thx!

The best I've seen is The Official Guide to Steinway Pianos by Roy F. Kehl and David R. Kirkland printed by Amadeus Press and available, oddly enough, through Steinway New York. thumb

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

There is also a history of Steinway pianos by Ronald V. Ratcliffe entitled 'Steinway' and published by Chronicle Books, San Fransisco. It has a 'Foreword' by Henry Z. Steinway and includes two appendices - I Steinway Patents and II Steinway Artists.

I have been around pianos my entire life. I can't say I've ever truly "fallen in love" with a Steinway piano I've played. They vary so much, and unless they are meticuoulsly maintained they leave a bit to be desired

All pianos vary, and all leave at least a bit to be desired unless they are maintained.
