To everyone who enjoys taking (or viewing) shop photos - I thought a thread dedicated to the posting of before / after photos of piano projects might be fun. I would invite any of you to post a before photo of a project along with an after photo. This could be a set of photos of a total piano restoration, or of a much simpler subject matter, such as the following:

Before:

After:

I have been using "Tinypics" to post my photos (thanks to whoever it was that mentioned this website). It's very easy to use.

I hope this thread will be an enjoyable site to post and visit! Have a great week all! Chuck Behm

Hi David - Check out the bottom of the legs of this Chickering spinet:

One job I love is polishing brasswork - easy to do and the results are amazing. I'll post an after photo of the piano as a whole when it's put back together. I'm doing the final buffing and polishing of the case parts now, and hope to have it reassembled by the end of the week. Chuck

Hi Chuck,

I really enjoy these threads and am following the other one closely, as well.

Do you lacquer your brass brightwork or leave it natural?

Hi Marty - I lacquer it using spray lacquer from Schaff. However, the photo of the brass fitting was after I got done polishing it, but before lacquering it. I'll wait until I'm done with all the brasswork, and do it all at once. Chuck

Still work in progress but you can see how wood can change with a lot of work!!

Thanks for the reply Chuck.

That certainly is elegant cabinetry on the Chickering console! I look forward to the "after."

Lluís, that is a beautiful finish you are applying! Are there decorative brass handles for the sides?

Hi Chris - The photo didn't appear on your post, but I found the photo your were referring to when I clicked on the link. Nice work! Can I ask how you blended the 2 photos together to make one the way you did? Chuck

Chuck,

Thanks for the compliment on my photo.

The two-sided photo was done with Photoshop. I try and look at my "before" shots and somewhat duplicate the camera position, lighting, etc, for the "after" shots. Once you have two photos of before and after, the rest is just Photoshop skills. I'm by no means an expert with Photoshop, but I know my way around enough.

Let's see...If this method of posting photos doesn't work, then I give up!

Oh, hey, look it worked!

You will probably mostly need to put them in a hot E.T.D.A. bath , those parts may not need a lot of polishing, just cleaning , IMO.

Hi all - Here's a shot of the original soundboard decal on our Chickering grand project - a bit weathered looking. Notice also the tidy job of repairing the soundboard crack which was previously done. Something that came out of a tube:

Here's the new decal - I love putting these on:

I'll have more before / after shots to post later on. Have a great weekend, everyone. Chuck
